An oldie’s journey through the website

Here at the Oldies Club we’re always delighted to hear about an oldie that has found a new home; especially if the new owner tracked-down his or her mature companion using the Oldies Club website. Beautiful Sham, shown above, is a former Oldies Club dog that found herself a wonderful new home.

However there are quite a few oldies that, despite being listed here, have been waiting far too long for a new home. These are the ones that are listed on our Overlooked Oldies page.

We thought you may be interested to know a little more about how the Oldies Club website works and how an oldie ends up in Overlooked Oldies, so that you can be sure not to miss finding your perfect canine friend.

Rescues send a description and photo of their older resident to the Oldies Club web team. We then create a listing based on the information provided and if there’s anything missing that we think potential adopters will want to know, we try to find that out. We also create entries for our own Oldies Club dogs – ones that are waiting for their new home in one of our network of foster homes.

Newly created entries appear at the top of the Adopt an Oldie page. As new entries are added this obviously means that existing entries get pushed down the page. We like to limit the number of entries on Adopt an Oldie to 50 or 60 so that the list is a manageable size. But of course this means that, as we often have over a 100 homeless oldies listed, the overflow needs to go somewhere. This is where Overlooked Oldies comes in.

When the Adopt an Oldie list has become too long, the bottom few entries are moved to Overlooked Oldies. They appear at the bottom of the Overlooked Oldies list because we like to have the dogs that have been waiting longest at the top. Poor old Duke the Rottweiler who has been at Bath Cats and Dogs Home since May 2003, has been at the top of Overlooked Oldies for quite a while. It would be so wonderful to hear one day that he has found a new home.

When we do hear that an oldie has found a home, the entry is updated to say this and it is moved into Rehomed Dogs. This page is listed in order of the date that the oldie’s entry was created. So an oldie that finds a home quickly will appear at or near the top of Rehomed Dogs, and it will gradually get pushed down the list.

Some oldies are also featured in Rehoming Stories. These are ones whose delighted new owner has contacted us to tell us all about the wonderful life their oldie is having in its new home. It’s always great to see photos of a smug oldie, cosy on his comfy sofa, having put his sad days behind him!

Sasha, shown below, was an Overlooked Oldie for such a long time but she is now enoying life in a loving home.

If you have space on your sofa for an oldie, please consider an Overlooked Oldie. They really do deserve the very best.
