10 August 2016 ~ we have very sad news to share :-(. The beautiful Miss Ellie, one of our treasured Oldies Club sponsor dogs, very sadly passed away yesterday :-(. Our thoughts are with her lovely forever-foster family, who took such great care of Ellie for us and who love her so much. Run free, dear Ellie x

Ellie is a gorgeous 15 year old Collie Cross girl who came into Oldies Club care after her owner went into a care home.

Ellie settled at her foster home and into their routine very quickly and has proven to be a really lovely girl to have around.

Unfortunately, soon after arriving in Oldies Club care, a vet found a couple of lumps on Ellie’s underside and said those and another swelling are almost certainly likely to be tumours. It would be possible to remove them via a mammary strip, but the vet advised this is a big operation that takes a fair amount of time for a dog to bounce back from, with no guarantee it would capture all of the tumour cells.

Following the vet’s advice and considering Ellie’s age, we made the decision not to proceed with surgery on this occasion, and to place Ellie in our sponsor dog scheme. This means she will remain in her lovely foster home on a permanent basis, with Oldies Club covering the cost of her vet bills for the rest of her life.

On a more positive note, the vet said Ellie is otherwise in very good general health. She has a very shiny coat and such a pretty face.

Ellie is very much enjoying life in her forever foster home. She is amazing with other dogs and lives very happily with two other dogs now.

Ellie is happy to be left for a few hours in the company of the other dogs, but she does love to be around her people, so needed to be in a home where she isn’t left for long hours every day. She loves to watch what her people are doing and follow them around in her home.

Ellie loves children and seems happier to sit with them on the sofa than with adults! She loves to follow them around in the house and see what they are doing. She used to live with a cat at her old home and hasn’t shown any interest in them when out and about.

Ellie loves her walks and is very lively when out and about and is excellent off the lead. She really enjoys running around in the woods, exploring, but never goes too far and always checks where you are. She is strong on the lead, but she is a quick learner and picks up training very quickly. Although she says a quick ‘hello’ to other dogs on walks, she isn’t overly interested. She is keen to jump into the car and travels well.

Poor Ellie does experience anxiety during thunderstorms and fireworks and becomes subdued and wants to be around her people even more than usual. She doesn’t bark, but her head and tail hang down :-(

According to Ellie’s fosterers, she is gentle, sweet, young-for-her-years, fit! They say ‘You couldn’t find a dog with a bigger heart.’

If you would love to offer a home to an oldie but your circumstances aren’t suitable, perhaps you would be kind enough to sponsor Ellie, or one of the other special oldies we are caring for in our sponsor dog scheme.
