13/10/17 – Geo, the cheeky little tinker, has gone to his new home!

Geovanni (Geo for short!) is a 10 year old Yorkshire Terrier who came into the Oldies Club rescue because he was being left for long hours and he needed more attention than his owner could give him. Geo is in an Oldies Club foster home in Lincoln, waiting for someone to offer him a permanent home.

Larger than life character: Geo is a small dog with a big character. He settled at his foster home within about 4 days and he simply loves to be centre-stage, lapping up lots of love, attention and walks.

Can be left for a few hours: Although Geo loves to be around his humans, he can be left on his own for a few hours while you pop to the shops etc. He wouldn’t be happy living in a full-time working household though.

Could perhaps live with small, friendly dog: Geo loves to have lots of attention so would be happy as your only dog, but his foster carer thinks he might also enjoy having a canine friend, provided it was smallish and not overly dominant. Geo likes to think he’s the boss! He gets on fine with most dogs when out, but he doesn’t like it if they are overbearing and in his face. He was brilliant with all the dogs he met when he helped out at an Oldies Club street collection recently. In his foster home there’s a resident small, calm female dog who he rubs along with happily. He guards his possessions from her though. He has his limits!

Unknown with cats: Outside, he seems to ignore other animals (except dogs), but we are unsure if he would live with a cat.

Calm older children only: Geo is an excitable little chap, and his excitement would probably be exacerbated by lively children, so he would be best with older, sensible children only.

Needs regular walks: Geo loves his walks and will bark as you’re getting ready to take him. He is mostly very good on the lead, but he can be quite stubborn if he wants to go the other way, and he likes crossing roads! He has recently started going off-lead in safe places and he is very good and stays near you. His recall isn’t great, but he generally slows down so that you can catch him, or if you pretend to turn around he will come back to you. Geo was taught to not poo in the garden, so he must be taken for walks regularly. He currently has three walks per day: two short poo-walks plus a longer walk of about 40 minutes.

Needs to sit with you in the car: Geo isn’t good in the car, but this is improving and with trial and error his foster carer has found that he is better if he is as close to a human as possible. He either needs someone in the back with him (he is restrained in his harness) or to be restrained on the front seat next to you.

Geo’s favourite pastimes: Walkies. Snuggling (he likes you to make a circle with your knees so that he can snuggle in the middle of it like a nest). Chews and treats. Barking (he is getting much better at not doing this!). Toys; Geo really loves toys, but certain ones do send him into a frenzy so you have to be careful which ones. Oh and he loves socks! And finally, he likes investigating cupboards…

Geo’s dislikes: Geo is actually quite a sensitive soul and he finds new situations quite worrying (although he doesn’t like you to know that) so he needs introducing gently to new things. And he doesn’t like rain!

Geo’s ideal home: Geo is a stubborn, temperamental, wilful, feisty, lovable, cheeky yorkie who, although clearly loved for the first 10 years of his life, seems to have been allowed to get away with rather too much. He is getting much better though, and he now even eats dog food as well as ham off a plate, thank you very much! However, he does need a home with people who are experienced with terriers (preferably yorkies) as he still has a tendency to be a hooligan and rather naughty.

Health notes: Geo is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and has been wormed and flea treated. He has slight arthritic changes in his elbows and neck. He did have a limp when he first arrived in foster but this seems to have cleared up. The specialist said that he may respond better to steroids rather than regular painkillers if he starts limping in the future. For now he just needs a joint supplement such as Yumove though.

Geo in a few words: Excitable. Lovable. Cheeky. Sensitive. Naughty. Intelligent.

Geo’s foster mum says:Geo is a delightful little person who just needs someone patient, who understands him and will help him learn where he fits in in life and that he can’t always have his own way. He is much better now than when he first came and is turning into a real sweetie who just likes to lie upside in your arms and watch the world go by!

If you would love to offer a home to an oldie but your circumstances aren’t suitable, perhaps you would be kind enough to sponsor one of the special oldies we are caring for that, due to health problems, are unlikely to be offered a permanent home.
