13/2/2010 In no time at all Toby and Charlie’s foster mum just knew that she couldn’t live without them, so they are staying for good!!

11/2/2010 Toby & Charlie are now settled in a foster home in Chelmsford where their foster mum says they are really easy dogs, no problems at all, they are not possessive about their food or toys, there’s absolutely nothing negative to say about them. They need longish walks and a calm, loving home. They’ve settled in so quickly and have been no problem with the existing dogs or the cats. They’re just perfect boys!

Toby is a 13-14 year old Bearded Collie and his best friend is Charlie, a 6 year old German Shepherd/Rottweiler cross. Their devoted owners sadly have health problems and are unable to cope with their beloved dogs. What a terrible shame for all concerned. Toby and Charlie are being rehomed by the Ark but they are in a foster home in Chelmsford, Essex. Their foster carer couldn’t bear them to be in kennels any longer and offered them refuge until they find their permanent home.
Toby and Charlie are lovely dogs who have never shown any aggression and are house-trained. They are used to being left 4-5 hours. They have been well loved and cared for dogs and are used to sleeping in the bedroom. They enjoy playing with each other and, out and about, they are clicker trained and have good recall. Charlie pulls on the lead but Toby is better.
Proof that dogs are so resilient is that both of these boys have very sad, separate, tales to tell about the beginning of their lives…

Toby was found in a canal in a bag as a puppy, with his dying siblings. Despite such a sad start, he has developed into a gorgeous boy who enjoys his walks and runs in the park. He is going deaf, but it can be selective!, and his coat needs lots of grooming, especially in winter. Toby has some arthritis and so he has cod liver oil capsules.

Charlie was abused in his first home and due to this he is still nervous of strangers, but he’s never aggressive and he responds well to gentle tones. He tends to try and make himself small if frightened, bless him. He had to have his tail amputated as he became upset every time he wagged it and hit himself with it and so he would attack it and chew it. Isn’t that the saddest thing? But, he doesn’t let things get him down too much as he’s very energetic – needs at least an hour’s walk – and loves playing with balls and toys.

It is hard to find homes for pairs of dogs, but this pair is so special that the Ark really would like them to stay together if possible.
They are good with people (Charlie obviously needs to be given time and understanding with new people), they are excellent with children from babies upwards, and they have lived with cats and are very good with them. They are fine with other dogs.
