Barley (Freshfields Animal Rescue, Liverpool)

30/10/12 Barley is now settled in a long-term foster home!

—————–

Barley is an 8 year old Lurcher who has been through a terrible time. He arrived at Freshfields Animal Rescue in Liverpool, as a stray, starving and covered in painful sores.

Despite his suffering, Barley is a wonderful, trusting boy. He is so affectionate and just wants to be with you all of the time.

Because of his past treatment, now that Barley has found that there are kind people around, he wants to be with someone all of the time and he becomes very distressed when left alone. He has injured himself trying to escape from his kennel after someone left. Poor Barley – it’s so upsetting to think what is going through his mind.

Barley needs a quiet, settled home with someone around most of the time, and willing to try to help him overcome his fear of being left. This separation anxiety may be something that will never go away, so any prospective home must be sure they can manage Barley’s separation issues, and must be fully committed to helping him. Returning him to rescue at the first hurdle would be a major trauma for Barley and would make his fear of being left even worse.

Barley doesn’t have a bad bone in his body and he is a joy to be around. He loves going for short walks, in fact he adores doing anything as long as he’s with a person. This special lad really deserves a safe home where he can learn that he will never be abandoned or mistreated again.

Barley has been neutered. He is on Metacam for arthritis and will need this on an ongoing basis. He can only manage short walks.

Barley needs to be the only dog in his new home. He freezes when he sees dogs out on walks and it isn’t clear how he would react if a dog came up to him. He needs a home without cats. It isn’t known if Barley is used to children and, as he can get quite stressed, he would be best with children aged 15+. He isn’t a suitable dog for first time dog owners, and he wouldn’t be happy in a home with people coming and going a lot.
