Missy is a gentle 13 year old Boxer x Staffie who came into Oldies Club care in Mid 2017 due to her owner’s landlord rescinding previous agreements for tenants to have dogs in their flats.
Missy settled in quickly with her foster family, enjoying a cuddle and twice daily plod at a slow pace which suits her. After a check with the vet she seemed quite well apart from being a little tubby. She had a small lump which the vet wanted to investigate believing at the time to be a blocked anal gland. Sadly the results came back that it was far more sinister and the lump was in fact a tumour and also inoperable.
Due to her health concerns and unknown time left, Oldies Club made the decision to place Missy in our sponsor dog scheme, which means she will remain at her lovely foster home on a permanent basis, with the charity paying her vet bills for the rest of her life.
Missy’s foster family didnt even have to think twice before agreeing to keep her as a long term foster for the rest of her days. Her fosterers have discussed it with the children so they are well prepared. The children have made Missy a “Happy list” of all the things she may like to do whilst she is still fit enough – places to visit, games to play.. They hope that giving her as much love and happiness will keep her healthier for longer.
Missy’s fosterers say there is something very special about her. She is a sensitive and beautiful dog inside and out. She is the type of dog who, without trying, can make you stop whatever you are doing and just lie down and cuddle, Even those who have little affinity with dogs have gone soft after meeting her. She is placid, easy going and just adores the children. She is the missing piece of their family jigsaw.
When Missy first arrived she was pretty unfit and only able to do very short slow walks. Nowadays through a gentle introduction to more exercise she had improved so much. She can walk quicker and sprint enjoying games of hide and seek, chase and a good game of tug with a dangling knotted rope.
Missy attended a dog show at a local fete and won 1st place in the Golden Oldies category.
Missy enjoyed a family break in Devon. They are not sure if she has been to the beach or around water much before and was not very confident to go out of her depth, Missy has now discovered that she can swim and is hooked and now loves a quick dip whilst playing fetch during her afternoon walk.
Missy loves to be snuggled up nice and warm in the evenings and will often bury her face under a blanket too. She had recently been treated to a comfy new bed and throw which she loves.
Missy is more a ‘people’ dog rather than a ‘dog’ dog. She does like to say hello to others dogs and a quick sniff but leaves it at that. With people she loves everyone, young and old, and they seem to love her too.
If you would love to offer a home to an oldie but your circumstances aren’t suitable, perhaps you would be kind enough to sponsor Missy or one of the other special oldies we are caring for in our sponsor dog scheme.
