Jay (RSPCA Macclesfield, SE Cheshire & Buxton)

Jay is a 9-year-old West Highland Terrier who is with RSPCA Macclesfield, SE Cheshire & Buxton, in a foster home in Macclesfield.

He is a real character, bold and cheeky, and is hairless due to skin issues and allergies. Jay has the true Westie temperament and is also very affectionate.

Jay has been well cared for his whole life (the rescue has full medical history) but has had skin and allergy issues his whole life; unfortunately this is a common problem with Westies and no doubt due to bad breeding. Jay’s elderly owners sadly became ill and could no longer take care of him.

Jay needed veterinary care upon arrival and continues to do so. He will need ongoing care, including lifelong eye drops for dry eye, steroids and possibly antibiotics periodically, and he has a cream massaged into his skin daily which he loves. More recently he’s also needed a mousse treatment for his paws. He is partially sighted. Jay has been neutered and is microchipped and fully vaccinated.

Jay can be rather vocal, especially when you’re on the phone: “how dare you forget about me” he says! He sometimes gives the impression he’s bigger and harder than he is, with an occasional grumpy growl, but he’s a softy really – a softy with quirks. He needs a quiet home where he is your only pet and where there are no young children.

Jay does have accidents in the home but has massively improved. He’ll need someone around all day so that he can have very regular visits to the garden, plus walks, to help with this. Dust mites are a real problem for him, so a home with hard flooring rather than carpets will be best. Carpets can make him very itchy as they tend to harbor dust mites. He is fed Tails grain-free fish dog food which he loves and is best for his skin and allergies.

Because of his health issues, Jay is very much a hands-on dog, so he needs someone with the commitment, energy and confidence to look after him. You will be completely rewarded though as hairless little Jay is an absolute sweetheart!

Could you be the person for Jay?
