October 2014 – Dear Arnie has very sadly passed away. We’re very grateful to his lovely foster family for welcoming him into their family and taking such great care of him for us, for his final months. Run free at Rainbow Bridge, lovely boy.

31.7.2014 Lovely Arnie is staying with his foster mum.

This wonderful old lad, Arnie, has arthritis and needed an owner who would be around a lot of the time. He has a gorgeous Goldie nature. Luckily for Arnie his lovely foster Mum has agreed to keep him as a permanent foster, and he is now one of our sponsor dogs.

Arnie is a 13 year old Golden Retriever who came into Oldies Club care after his elderly owner went into a nursing home. Arnie found himself in kennels until his owner’s relative contacted Oldies Club to see if we could help.

Arnie is very friendly towards other dogs and is currently living with two other dogs, and a dog savvy cat!

Arnie is very slow and “doddery” and only needs short walks a couple of times a day. He sometimes takes a very slow walk to the park (100 yards away) and has a short sniff around once there. He loves going outside, but gets quite unstable if he is out for too long. He is good on the lead, but sometimes veers off when his legs become wobbly. His new Mum has not tried to correct this with the use of the lead as Arnie might lose his balance if pulled too hard. He is very slow, so it isn’t a problem. Off lead, his recall is not good due to his poor hearing and poor eyesight. His Mum doesn’t let him wander too far, and attracts his attention by clapping or waving and calling his name quite loudly. He always comes back once he sees you. He rarely wanders far unless there are other dogs nearby. Arnie doesn’t know his own limitations. If he sees other dogs in the park he will wander after them and try to follow them around, despite his poor mobility. He is kept on a lead to stop him becoming too tired and unsteady.

Arnie likes any type of toy to squeak or chew, but he particularly likes a soft ball to play with. He also likes to rescue odd socks from the laundry basket!

Arnie is very arthritic, with some muscle wastage in his back legs. He is on daily metacam, which appears to control his pain well. He also has cataracts, but does have some vision, and is hard of hearing.

Arnie’s foster Mum who is now keeping him with her  permanently says “He is young-at-heart and friendly. Arnie is quite vocal if he can’t see where you are. I think this is mainly because he can’t easily get up and follow you.”
