Feisty Lucky (Oldies Club Sponsor Dog)

13/11/22 Sadly Lucky became very poorly and we had to make the decision to let her go. Our thoughts are with her fosterer who cared for her the last five years. Sleep tight little one x

Lucky is a 18 year old Jack Russell Terrier girl who came into the Oldies Club care in December 2017 because of issues between Lucky and the other dog in the home.

When Lucky first arrived she had a rather obvious cataract in her left eye. Her vision seemed okay but she would bump into things.  Overtime her eyesight has become progressively worse at quite a pace. This loss of her sight has made her very anxious especially at being left and at times snappy.  The sudden change means she now seeks constant reassurance and attention.

Due to her increased anxiety and feisty nature Oldies Club made the decision to place Lucky in our sponsor dog scheme, which means she will remain in our care on a permanent basis, with the charity paying her vet bills for the rest of her life. As she needed a terrier experienced foster home she moved to join Sponsor dog Tom (who has sadly passed away since).

Lucky settled in well with her new foster family. She loved going on walkies with the gang. They all walk well together offlead but her fosterers knew that with her declining eyesight at some point she would need to spend her walks on lead.  They tried to keep to routine walks she when her eyesight does go the area she walks will still be familiar to her. Nowadays Lucky doesn’t go walkies as much. Her fosterer did try to introduce a dog pram but Lucky wasn’t fond of it.

In October 2021 Lucky was diagnosed with glaucoma and had to have her eye removed. This thankfully did not phase our girl.

Lucky is slowing down nowadays but occasionally she still loves to play. She used to enjoy ball games and pulling on her soft toys. She also loved ripping up cardboard and paper, and if she finds a cardboard item in the house it is not safe from her! The video below is Lucky in her ‘younger’ years.

Lucky now enjoys cuddling up with the other resident dogs. When she first moved in her canine companions were all terriers but now she has bigger Labrador pals to snuggle with.

Lucky often shows her cheeky side of wanting to play but what she mainly wants is company. She has to sit on an available lap, she follows her fosterers all over the house even upstairs. This was a worry at first but she is very careful about
coming down (Her fosterer carries her in the mornings as it’s still dark when they get up). Lucky barks to let them know when she can’t do something like jumping of the settee or getting past one of the other dogs on the stairs.

If you would love to offer a home to an oldie but your circumstances aren’t suitable, perhaps you would be kind enough to sponsor Lucky, or one of the other special oldies we are caring for in our sponsor dog scheme.
