Grumpy Lucky Loo (Oldies Club Sponsor Dog)

31/05/2019 Sadly Lucky Loo has passed away. She was rushed to the vets as she appeared to be in severe pain. The vets suspected a tumour in her abdomen but an x-ray discovered she had dislocated her hip and her socket was completely worn away.  Due to her multiple health issues and behavioural issues it was felt that putting Lucky through an amputation operation was not in her best interest and she peacefully passed away in her fosterers arms.

Lucky is a 13 year old Jack Russell Terrier who came into Oldies Club care with her sister Patch in December 2017. They came into our care as their owner was poorly and no-one was able to look after them. After coming into our care the sisters started fighting on a regular basis and it was decided they should be split so Patch moved to a separate foster home where she was later adopted by her new new fosterer.

Lucky was clearly a frightened girl when she first arrived and would lash out aggressively. She showed signs of guarding her space & food and wasnt a lapdog like her sister. She decided to claim the draught excluder as her own to sit on, although it is not the easiest thing to sleep on and she would often fall off it.

Lucky is very distrusting of people. Something may have happened in her past that we are unaware of to make her this way. Thankfully though Lucky has over time built up a strong bond with her fosterers and their daughter. Lucky does not like being handled particularly by a vet so her fosterers go in with her to help her with her stress levels. The vets have had a few nipped fingers. Lucky is now muzzled at the vets.

Lucky has liver issues and her urine tests revealed an underlying kidney problem. She must take daily medication long-term and undergo regular check ups. Lucky also has an  heart murmur. Due to these issues she is not spayed. She  has two prominent fibro cysts but unless life threatening the vets do not want to operate for the above reasons. She also displays some signs of having dementia.

Lucky now likes to show her foster family affection by gentle nibbling and although improvements have been made with her foster family Lucky would still act out aggressively to visitors especially men. Oldies Club made the decision to place her in our sponsor dog scheme. This means Lucky will remain at her lovely foster home on a permanent basis,  where her behaviour can be managed and the charity will be paying her vet bills for the rest of her life.

Lucky wears a yellow ‘nervous’ harness when out due to her fear of strangers but sadly people tend to ignore this as she’s a cute little dog and approach. To protect Lucky she must now wear her muzzle when out walking in an area where they may come across other people. Despite her fighting with her sister Lucky actually loves other dogs.

Lucky and Patch lived outside prior to coming into Oldies Club care and despite being with us 8 months Lucky still gives her fosterer a look each time she comes into the house as if to check she is definitely allowed indoors.

Lucky loves food, sun bathing, her walks and her routine. She often shows signs of being playful and loves catching tennis balls. She is also now a rather cuddly dog who loves to snuggle up with her foster family on the sofa.

If you would love to offer a home to an oldie but your circumstances aren’t suitable, perhaps you would be kind enough to sponsor Lucky, or one of the other special oldies we are caring for in our sponsor dog scheme.
