31/05/22 – Sadly Sponsor Dog Gemma has passed away.

Gemma is a lovely 16 year old Shih Tzu who came into our care in June 2021 via one of our partner Dogs Homes who will assist when we can. Sadly she had been handed in due to her owners ill health and they could no longer care for her.

Once Gemma had arrived and settled she was taken to the vets for a health check. Gemma suffers with dry eye so has to take daily drops. This can make her eyes a little gunky so her fosterer has to clean her face regularly. Gemma is not the biggest fan on her eye drops. Gemma also has a lump on her bottom which the vets believe is benign. If it was to turn into anything nasty due to her age they wouldnt operate anyway. Gemma also suffers with anaemia and kidney disease so was put on a special diet. On top of this poor Gemma was diagnosed with bronchitis and given medicine to help with this.

Due to her multiple health issues and age, Oldies Club made the decision to place Gemma in our sponsor dog scheme, which means she will remain at her lovely foster home on a permanent basis, with the charity paying her vet bills for the rest of her life.

Although she is 16 Gemma gets pretty excited about the prospect of a little walk. She enjoys stopping for sniffs every few steps and turning back home when she’s had enough. Normally after about 10-15minutes. She has to be carried to cross a road as she is just too slow and arthritic for the cars. Gemma loves a fuss and is super friendly with anyone wanting to stroke her as long as they take it slow and doesnt surprise her.

Gemma likes to follow her fosterer around like a little shadow from room to room. She just wants to be close by and does bark when she cant find her. Gemma needs movement close to her and a sniff to make sure who it is as calling her doesnt help as she cant hear.

Granny Gemma sleeps a lot. Getting up in the mornings is quite hard.  She is definitely not a morning dog! Gemma can often be found dozing or staring into nothingness-too tired to do anything. Just ‘resting her eyes’. Gemma loves sleeping and loves her new bed. Taking herself off to sleep by around 9pm every evening and snoring away till morning.
Although she has been given a special  a diet for her kidneys Gemma is not a big fan of the food. It takes quite a bit of persuasion to get her to eat it. Gemma would much rather have her favourite snack of small chunks of frankfurter.

Gemma’s fosterer says she is a little gem!

If you would love to offer a home to an oldie but your circumstances aren’t suitable, perhaps you would be kind enough to sponsor Gemma, or one of the other special oldies we are caring for in our sponsor dog scheme.
