20 June 2012 ~ We are very sad to have to let you know that dear Shep passed away today. Shep spent his final months in a wonderful foster home, surrounded by love. Our thoughts are with the family who took such great care of him for us. Sleep tight Shep. You will be much missed.

Shep, also fondly known as The Shepster is a 15 year old Collie Cross (the other half being Husky or Malumute). He came into Oldies Club care when his owner had to move into sheltered accomodation.

This dear old lad has severe arthritis and the muscles in his back legs are atrophied. When he first arrived at his foster home he struggled to walk, but thanks to pain medication he is making the most of rambles around the garden and even enjoys short gentle strolls down the lane behind his new home, although these are more like sniffing expeditions than walks!

Blood tests showed that Shep has serious liver problems so he is now on special medication to make him more comfortable. Because of his health problems, Oldies Club has decided that Shep should become a sponsor dog, so he will stay in his foster home and Oldies Club will cover his vet bills.

Shep is an incredibly sweet natured boy who has settled in easily and immediately bonded with his fosterers and their young Lurcher, Skye. The two dogs now play together and Shep looks so pleased with himself when they both hurl toys at each other and swap them :-) He is very generous and even shares his favourite chews. He is a very sociable boy, both with people and other dogs and now gets up to greet visitors with a waggy tail and a big smile. He loves nothing more than a cuddle and kisses on top of his head and will look up hopefully and roll over to ask for hugs and tummy rubs!

This photo shows Shep being towelled dry after being out in the rain. He is first out of the door on a rainy day and goes into paroxysms of delight about being dried!

His fosterers absolutely adore him and he charms everyone he meets. They made a really sweet video of Shep playing with his friend, Skye – take a look, it’s wonderful :)

If you would like to help us care for Shep, please consider taking part in our sponsor scheme.
