Update 13-9-2005
Sad news. Lukka was put to sleep this morning.

Georgina, who has been helping to care for Lukka, writes:

“Mark is in hospital so Jackie and I been looking after Lukka between us. Last night when she brought him back from his walk (which he cut short, did not want to go round the whole field) he fell over just outside the house and could not get up for a while. Then he went indoors. This morning he could not get up, and did not even lift his head so she called me over. He was not interested in his toys, or tidbits, and could not stand even when lifted. He was not in any pain or distress.

We took him to the PDSA who said that they could possibly keep him going for another week, but that it would be kinder to let him go now rather than him be unable to move and get distressed if he messed himself. Jackie and I decided that we would do whatever was right for Lukka and we were both holding him as he slipped away. We have arranged an individual cremation, and Mark can decide what he wants to do with the ashes when he gets home.

We then had to go down to the hospital and tell Mark – who naturally is extremely upset.

Lukka had a fantastic time with Mark – caravan holidays, playing in the sea, etc…. and plenty of love. Yesterday morning he ignored the toy I had dug out for him and was tormenting Alice by trying to get her favourite blue squeaky cracker. When we went out yesterday morning he was following her round the rabbit holes (although I am not sure if he knew what he was looking for as he ignored the one which shot across the path a bit later).”

Goodbye Lukka, and thank you so much Mark, for giving Lukka a wonderful last few months.

Here is Lukka’s story as it was written up this Spring when he went to his final forever home

14 year old Old English Sheepdog Lukka spent four long years with Celtic Animal Lifeline, waiting for a new home. At last, he has found the perfect home with new dad Mark – and he looks very happy about it!

Lukka, a loving, passionate dog with a real zest for life, had been waiting for so long, it seems amazing that he’s finally found a real home, and we’re sure he will make the most of it – we’re told that this happy pair are already planning their first caravan holiday together!

Last night Oldies Club member Georgina got a phone call from Mark, saying “we have just got out of the shower, do you want to take some pictures” – luckily he had got some clothes on – but she made them come over to her house to be on the safe side!!!

Lukka’s hair is growing to match Mark’s!

Lukka does not believe in standing still while there are toys to play with, so not brilliant photos, but Mark wanted to show you that the boy is well.
