Madeline in the pound

A terrified wreck in the pound, neglected and matted, oldie Airedale cross Madeline came into foster care with the Oldies Club under The Alice Project .

05/06/2005

Madeline has arrived! Now out of the pound environment, she is not as terrified as she first appeared and – although Madeline’s coat is in fairly poor condition – she seems fit and active… and still a little mischievious! ;-)

Madeline seems to have some form of training at some point in her life – when she took herself off for an impromptu run, she responded to the command ‘down’, and returned nicely for a treat.

Overall a loving, affectionate girl, Madeline is not too impressed by other dogs. She doesn’t like too much fuss from them, and will tell them – in no uncertain terms – when she’s had enough! She will work on brushing up her social graces while in foster care.

10/06/05 – a few words from Madeline’s new foster mum:

Madeline travelled well in the car and, when we got home, we were quite surprised at her very high spirits as she looked around the garden and then the house. She wasn’t at all subdued.

She found a ball in the garden which she initiated us in, enjoying a few little lame throws whilst on the flexi lead.

The rest of the evening was a mix of sleeping and little bursts of excitement – she gets quite excited if you walk into a room or down from the stairs especially! She hasn’t jumped up though.

Madeline seems to like quite a lot of reassurance, approaches often for a hug – tail wagging, smiley face, and follows us around, but that’s fine we are giving her plenty of affection but allowing her to be quiet too.

Today we have been on a 4 mile walk on the flexi lead (no problem for this “Oldie”!) and Madeline was as good as gold, plodding along the straight and narrow purposefully but never pulling – we met lots of dogs and she was very relaxed and jolly in every instance.

04/07/05 – Madeline is staying!

Madeline is to stay with her foster mums Andrea and Tina. She has settled so well, and bonded so closely with her foster family that everyone feels it would be unfair to move her on.

Maddy is quite protective of her human ‘pack’, and will be able to continue her training and brushing up her social skills in her new home without any disruption. She will also be able to continue the same programme of treatment for the skin allergies that left her in such an awful state in the pound and – hopefully – this will improve her coat and skin over time.

We wish Madeline and her new family a happy future, and look forward to plenty of updates – watch this space! :-)
