10 May 2016: We are sorry to have to update Diesel’s page with the news that he has very sadly passed away :-( Our thoughts are with Diesel’s forever fosterer, who put so much love and care into taking care of Diesel for us, with his various health issues, and is devastated at his loss. Run free, sweet boy x

Diesel is a handsome 11-12 year old Dobermann who arrived in the care of Oldies Club earlier this year. Diesel arrived underweight and very nervous of his new surroundings and his fosterer said it took him some months to settle in.

It was discovered that Diesel is double incontinent, which his foster home works hard to manage to keep him as clean and comfortable as possible. He also has bad arthritis in his back legs that he needs medication for, but he is also the first one at the door when a walk is mentioned, so the vet is happy for him to enjoy these walks for as long as he wants to. He receives medication in the evening to help with any pain and his fosterer says she knows he’s relaxed when the snoring begins!

Diesel has also shown some signs of dementia, seeming confused after waking from a sleep, although this has improved since he has settled into his foster home. In view of all of his health concerns, we decided to place the gorgeous boy in our sponsor scheme, meaning he remains in his lovely foster home on a permanent basis, with Oldies Club covering his vet bills for the rest of his life.

Diesel had to get used to the other two gorgeous dogs in his foster home, but as you can see from this lovely photo, this has all settled down nicely.

Diesel’s fosterer tells us that Diesel loves nothing more than to be touching you and being stroked – he puts a very gentle paw on your lap to let you know, ‘More please!’ He is amazing with children –  the little girl in the photo loves to join them for walks and he very gently walks with her.

Diesel will speak to other dogs but tends to give them a sniff then walk away to do his own thing. He loves the woods where he trundles off in his own world just looking round now and then to make sure his family is still there. He returns to them when called, so is easy to walk on and off the lead.

Feeding times are funny as Diesel lets his fosterer know if they are not doing it quickly enough and will hop around the kitchen talking. Once he’s eaten then all the dogs have to clean each others’ bowls to make sure no one has missed out on anything – all done with good manners making sure they have finished first.

Diesel’s fosterer discovered that he likes to sing in his own special way. It took some time but she thinks the real Diesel started to shine through, ‘He can be funny – when he’s exited he looks like Bambi on ice, he cant control his limbs, he’s just dancing around and letting you know he’s glad his family is home.’

According to Diesel’s fosterer, ‘Diesel is an absolutely fabulous boy, my only regret is that i didn’t have him years ago, as leaving his family has caused him such distress. Being 11-12yrs old it must have been a shock, but I think he’s happy here. Everyone he meets can’t believe what a wonderful nature he has. When he looks at you with his big ears and his ‘Any food going?’ look, you cant help but melt.’

Please consider sponsoring one of our oldies as a gift for a loved one (yourself included). If you would love to offer a home to an oldie but your circumstances aren’t suitable, perhaps you would be kind enough to sponsor Diesel or one of the other special oldies we are caring for in our sponsor dog scheme.
