22 February 2017: We are very sorry to have to update Leo’s page with the news that our lovely boy passed away yesterday :-(. Our thoughts and thanks are with his wonderful forever-foster family, who took such great care of Leo for us. Sleep tight, lovely boy x

Lovely Leo is an adorable 16-year-old American Cocker Spaniel boy, who came into the care of Oldies Club in 2015, as he wasn’t able to tolerate being around the young baby in his home. He settled into his foster home within a few weeks, but did experience separation anxiety when he first arrived in foster and does like to have company.

Leo has a grade 2 heart murmur and has had to have a dental and some extractions since arriving in our care, along with the removal of a number of warts, which were causing him irritation and risk of infection. He has cataracts on both eyes and is almost blind and is also deaf, but he is still making the most of life. He was rather overweight when he arrived in foster and he has made good progress on a carefully-managed diet. He receives daily mediation for his thyroid, ears and suspected allergies.

Due to Leo’s age and health concerns, we made the decision to place him in our Oldies Club sponsor dog scheme, which means he stays in his foster home on a permanent basis, with the charity covering his vet bills for the rest of his life.

Leo is good with other dogs and cats and has been well fine with older, dog-friendly children. He travels well in the car and learnt to use the ramp on the first occasion. Because he is deaf, he is not worried by loud noises such as thunderstorms.

Leo may be an older chap, but his forever-foster mum tells us that he’s still a cheeky, friendly, but laid back boy, who likes trying to get into the fridge! He still loves his food – and you can seen him enjoying some treats in the little video further down the page. He loves his fuss & snuggles and definitely loves the ladies! He’s not up to walking far now, but does enjoy socialising, sniffing and companionship. He will let his foster mum pick him up for lap cuddles.

Sweet Leo was placed on a new medication in June, to help his circulation and which seemed to perk him up. He started snoozing less of the day away and was following his family around more during the day and asking for fuss.

A vet check-up in July found no change with his heart murmur and the vet said he was doing well and in fairly good condition for his age, and couldn’t find any further problems. Leo is already receiving medication to help minimise the effect of his arthritis and the vet said he is doing well to be moving around as much as he is.

Leo’s forever-foster mum told us he is an affectionate, cheeky, fun and amazing sweetheart, who loves food and fuss – and who can blame him?!

If you would love to offer a home to an oldie but your circumstances aren’t suitable, perhaps you would be kind enough to sponsor Leo, or one of the other special oldies we are caring for in our sponsor dog scheme.
