31/12/18 Sadly Fudge developed a fast growing cancerous tumour on his thyroid gland which made him rather poorly. After discussions with the vets it was felt that due to his age and being quite fragile surgery was not an option. He was made comfortable over Christmas which he enjoyed but in the last few days began showing signs it was getting too much. He was put to sleep in his fosterers arms. Sleep tight lovely boy. x

Fudge is a lovely 15 year old Yorkshire Terrier who originally came into the Oldies Club in 2013 due to his owner’s ill health.   After his assessment in one of our foster homes he went on to what we believed to be his forever home.

Sadly two years later the gentleman in the household who had been his main carer went into a nursing home and the rest of the family decided they could no longer care for Fudge so he was returned to us.

Unfortunately Fudge was not returned in the best of condition and after a lovely bath he was booked in to the vets to help sort out his poorly eyes, ears & skin. Thankfully once receiving vet treatment and being fed correctly Fudge settled in well to his foster home.

Although Fudge is a well behaved, confident and happy chap mostly he doesn’t like to be separated from humans. Due to Fudge not being left for long in his original home he gets upset when he can’t see his owner/ fosterer, even when he has canine and feline company. On his return he would scream and howl and would gnaw doors and door frames in an attempt to find his foster carer. As long as he has a human companion nearby he is fine.

Due to his extreme separation anxiety Fudge requires a lot of reassurance and Oldies Club made the decision to place him in our sponsor dog scheme as another move would be unfair on him. Fudge will remain at his lovely foster home on a permanent basis, with the charity paying his vet bills for the rest of his life.

Fudge now spends his days pottering around with his pack of other mostly senior dogs of all shapes and sizes including Sponsor Dog Bella. There are occasional squabbles but due to age and lack of teeth in the household its mostly noise and ends and quickly as it begins.

Fudge is pretty much blind nowadays and the vet says he can only see vague shapes now as if looking through very thick frosted glass but this doesn’t impact on his quality of life. His bladder is not what it used to be and he gets his fosterer up in the night but she doesn’t mind. She calls him her sweet, faithful old man.

Despite his condition Fudge is a happy old soul and adores being fussed.

If you would love to offer a home to an oldie but your circumstances aren’t suitable, perhaps you would be kind enough to sponsor Fudge, or one of the other special oldies we are caring for in our sponsor dog scheme.
