05/07/21 – Sadly Max lost the use of his back legs yesterday. Unfortunately it was a spinal problem and nothing could be done so it’s time to say goodbye. Sleep tight little one x
Max is a 15-year-old Jack Russell Terrier who came into the Oldies Club care in June 2020 because his owner was moving into a care home. This little lad had been the devoted, loyal companion of his doting owner his whole life.
Max was rather nervous when he first arrived as his whole life had been turned upside down and he was wary of being touched. Progress was slow but his fosterer persevered. He started to settle in nicely in his foster home, allowing her to pick him up. He also started sleeping through the night however his toileting was still hit and miss.
Initially Max was put up for rehoming although being that he is a 3 legged, not totally clean dog who suffers with separation anxiety and will panic and barks if left alone we knew it was a big ask.
Despite this Max did receive interest. However Max ended up having a funny turn, falling on his side and messing himself. A vet visit confirmed Max had suffered a TIA (canine stroke) and that he would probably suffer more in the future. Due to this on top of his other needs Oldies Club made the decision to place Max in our sponsor dog scheme, which means he will remain at his lovely foster home on a permanent basis, with the charity paying his vet bills for the rest of his life.
Resident dog Archie helped Max to settle in. Having lived with the same person since he was a little pup coming into foster was a rather distressing time for Max. Archie seemed to be able to convince him that the fosterer was okay and he would be safe with them.
One of Max’s favourite things is his buggy provided by Oldies Club. As he doesnt like being left but cannot walk far. Max goes in the buggy when his foster carer walks Archie. He enjoys the trip out – about 45 minutes in total – and spends a good 10 minutes out of the buggy sniffing and bobbing around. His fosterer says it has changed Max’s life as he loves his buggy and seeing other people and doggie friends.
Max’s other two joys in life are sleeping and eating. As he is an elderly gentleman he doesnt really play these days. He loves his bed and food and is always up for a treat.
