June 2023 – Gorgeous Alfie was a very poorly boy with a large, inoperable tumour and has sadly had to be put to sleep. Rest easy now, Alfie.

—————

Adorable Alfie is an 11 year old Lab X Staffy who came into the Oldies Club rescue as his owners had to move and were unable to take him with them. He’s in an Oldies Club foster home in North Walsham, Norfolk, while he waits for a permanent home.

A happy boy in foster: Alfie settled into his foster home within a couple of days. He followed his foster carer around but was content to claim the sofa as his on the first night.

Can be left: Alfie is fine about being left on his own for a few hours when necessary. He just settles down and has a good snooze. He does love company though, so a home where someone is around a lot of the time would be best.

Only dog at home: Alfie wouldn’t want to live with another dog as he definitely wouldn’t share his toys and probably wouldn’t want to share his human’s affections! He is great with other dogs on walks though. He’s polite and will just ignore most, even little yappy ones. Sometimes he’ll have a quick play with one if it approaches him when he’s in a playful mood.

No cats: Alfie can’t live with cats as he barks and chases them if they’re in his garden. He ignores them when out and about though. Same applies to pigeons, so he couldn’t live with a pigeon fancier either!

Good with older children: Alfie has been great with the children he’s met. He could live with teenagers who would respect his space and his toys. He’s a very affectionate and playful boy but his resource guarding make him incompatible with younger children.

Loves walkies: Alfie is good on the lead, although he’s sometimes strong at first as he’s excited! He needs to be kept on the lead except when in a completely secure field as his recall is non-existent and he has no road sense at all. His excellent social skills and his joy of being out exploring mean it’s always a pleasure to take him out.

Thrilled by car rides: Alfie gets very excited when in the car. He needs to be either in a crate or behind a dog guard as he won’t stay still. He’s always keen to get in and go for an adventure!

Alfie’s favourite pastimes: He loves eating and going for walks. Also, he is very affectionate and loves kisses and cuddles. He likes playing tug-o-war and will bring you his rope toy to suggest a game when he wants one. He enjoys ball games too. He will happily lounge about for hours when nothing much is happening, preferably on the sofa but a comfy dog bed will sometimes suffice.

Alfie’s ideal home: It is essential that Alfie’s new home has a secure garden as he doesn’t like to make a substantial deposits on walks and prefers to do his business in the garden. Maybe it feels more private, bless him! As far as guarding his home goes, people walking towards the house (especially his arch nemesis The Postie) will get a warning bark but then he’ll gladly greet approved house guests. He wants owners who will give him the love and attention he deserves. Love is what he cares about most, food and toys following closely behind!

Health notes: Alfie is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and flea/worm treated. He has a heart condition for which he takes half a Vetmedin 5mg chewable tablet twice a day. He readily eats them from the palm of your hand. He will need this medication for the rest of his life. The vet has said that he is otherwise quite healthy.

More from Alfie’s foster carer: He is loving, playful, energetic and strong. Alfie is a sweet, affectionate dog who just wants to be with you. The only issue I have is the need to keep him on the lead during walks. I would love to let him off in the countryside near me, but I daren’t risk it. He loves to play but, equally, he loves to just sit with you and be stroked.

If you would love to offer a home to an oldie but your circumstances aren’t suitable, perhaps you would be kind enough to sponsor one of the special oldies we are caring for that, due to health problems, are unlikely to be offered a permanent home.
