4/1/14 – Sad news from Animals in Need: I’m sorry to inform you, sadly Jakey passed away about 3 weeks ago. Unfortunately he developed a tumor on his heart and we had to have him put to sleep. Thankfully he spent his last months living in our on site mobile home with a member of staff so at least had some home comforts and companionship before he left us. Run free, Jakey.

Jakey is a Staffordshire Bull Terrier of about 9 or 10 years of age who has been on our website for over a year but is still waiting for a new home. He is being rehomed by Animals in Need – Maxicare in Northamptonshire, and has been there a number of years.

Animals in Need describe Jakey as an absolute lamb with people, but what’s hindering his chances of finding a new home is that he isn’t good with other animals. However, this is easily overcome by ensuring that Jakey wears a muzzle on walks.

Jakey travels beautifully in the car and would make a splendid companion if you are looking for a dog to take out with you on journeys. He is playful too and has a toy collection that he loves to play with; but most of all he loves cuddles. Despite his lengthy spell in kennels, Jakey is a very clean boy who gets upset if he hasn’t managed to hang on until he can be let out of his kennel. Poor lad.

Maxicare have sent us this update on Jakey:

Jakey is a lovely kind-natured older brindle Staffy boy. He absolutely adores people and is a fabulous cuddler!

Jakey isn’t good with other animals but he doesn’t actively look for them — if a dog walks past he will carry his toy and try to ignore it. He is a sensitive boy and would be a fabulous companion for the right person.

Jakey travels like an angel and jumps in to any vehicle at the first opportunity, then sits quietly on the passenger seat watching the world go by out of the window, looking back with a glance every now and then to make sure you are still there. The picture below is Jakey in the front of our animal ambulance going out to do a vet run.

Our volunteers take him for long walks up to our local country park, where he likes to stop and enjoy the peace and quiet away from the noisy dogs at the kennels. Jakey is very clean in his kennel and when he needs to go out for a toilet break he lets us know, and the poor lad gets upset if he doesn’t manage to hold it until someone comes.

He has his own toy collection and is very toy motivated. He loves rope raggers, kongs (full of something yummy of course) and rawhide bones and chews; but his favourite by far is noisy squeaky toys – not usually squeaky for long though! He plays tug and fetch for as long as you want to, or is quite happy just to sit with you and have some company.

Doesn’t Jakey sound fabulous? He just needs to find his special new owner.

Jakey is neutered and in good health. He obviously needs a home where he is the only pet, but he can live with children aged 5 years and over.

We know there are lots of Staffies in rescue, but if you are looking for an older Staffy and have the experience to take on a dog that doesn’t like other animals, please, please consider Jakey. He’s waited too long and has so many things in his favour. Despite such a long time in kennels, he remains a happy, optimistic boy, but he would be so much happier in a home.
