Jacko (Stokenchurch Dog Rescue, Buckinghamshire)

Jacko is about 9 years of age, a Shar Pei cross (17kg and about knee-high), who finds himself at Stokenchurch Dog Rescue, Buckinghamshire, due to his owner sadly passing away. The rescue rehomes its dogs within a 50-mile radius of Stokenchurch.

Poor Jacko must have been very confused to find himself without his owner and in an unfamiliar environment and it has taken him a while to adjust. Now that he’s got to know the new people around him he seems much happier and he is always pleased to see them. Generally he can be a little unsure of new people at first, but it doesn’t take him too long to come around. Once you’ve made that connection with him, he is a fabulous character and most people end up falling in love with him. He’s a cheeky monkey but always means well.

Jacko is strong-willed, and he very much does what he wants to do and he will do everything he can to get his own way. His favourite pastime is being outdoors and exploring, but he wants to go where he wants to go, or he will put his stubborn pants on! He doesn’t seem to have had formal obedience training, but he is very clean in his kennel and will hold on until he goes for his regular toilet breaks, bless him. So he must have been fully housetrained. He will try to get into everything, including your bins, so he will keep you on your toes in that way. Some training to make him a little more well-rounded would be ideal, and it would also give him some mental enrichment, which would be good for him as, due to his hips, he cannot do a vast amount of physical exercise.

Jacko could potentially live with a compatible dog, but not cats. Children aged 10+ should be fine.

He’s met a variety of dogs at the rescue. There have been a few that, once the initial excitement was out the way and a quick greeting, Jacko has just gone off and done his own thing. There was a female bulldog that he was very pushy with, but not in a boisterous way, just in the sense of he was not leaving her alone and got a bit rude with the over sniffing. The rescue feels that Jacko could live with a well-socialised dog that isn’t too playful, subject to a successful initial meeting at the rescue. Jacko will need a minimum of two visits from the entire household ahead of the adoption process.

Jacko needs an owner who has some canine knowledge, and who is patient and understanding. You will also need to be willing to keep up with his medical needs. These include chronic atopic dermatitis for which he is on apoquel and medicated baths. He also has hip joint issues, which would normally be sorted with a hip replacement, but due to age-related risks he will not be able to have this done. He will therefore need daily pain relief and limited physical exercise. He also had entropian (eye lids rolled in) in both eyes but this has now been corrected.

Gorgeous Jacko is such a fun character to have around and he has many friends at the rescue, but it’s now time for him to find his forever family. If you have a strong mind like Jacko, then he might be the one for you! Could you offer him his ideal new home?
