Princess Pepper with spotty ears! (Oldies Club, fostered Devon)

Listed under: , ,

Pepper is a gorgeous spotty-eared 14-year-old Lurcher girl who came into Oldies Club rescue after the death of her owner. Pepper is in an Oldies Club foster home near Tavistock in Devon, waiting for someone to offer her a permanent home.

Urgent: Due to her foster carers’ commitments, Pepper can only remain in her current foster home until 11th February. To save her moving to another foster home and then moving again to a forever home, we are hoping that Pepper will be adopted quickly. If she looks like the dog for you, and you could offer her the type of home she needs, please get in touch!

Overview of Pepper: Pepper is a sweet girl with a lovely nature and the most adorable spotty ears. She was very thin when she arrived in foster care as her owner had been in hospital for 10 months and then sadly passed away, and poor Pepper was home alone all that time. She had regular visits from a relative, but she must have been feeling very sad and confused and she lost a lot of weight during that time due to pining for her owner. Pepper loves children but she needs to be your only pet. She’s fine with dogs on walks but has only ever lived as an only dog. She will chase cats! Pepper isn’t good with steps and stairs, so a home on one level, with a garden with minimal steps, is what she needs.

Settled quickly in foster care: Pepper made herself at home within a day or so.

Can be left: Pepper’s foster carers have left her for 3-4 hours and she has been fine, but as Pepper spent so long home alone previously, we want her to find a home where her owners will be around for most of the day.

Wants to be an only dog: Her foster carers have found Pepper to be non-reactive with dogs she meets on walks, and she walks well with them. Pepper has always lived as an only dog though, and we were told by her owner’s family that Pepper wouldn’t be happy to live with other dogs, so we are seeking a home where she will be the only dog.

Cat-free home needed: Pepper will chase cats so she needs a home without them.

Good with children: Pepper hasn’t lived with children but she has been used to having youngsters visit. Her foster carers have found her to be fine with visiting children, in fact she seems to love them. She gets on well with their youngest grandchild who is 5. If there are resident children in Pepper’s new home, they would need to be used to living with dogs and be old enough to understand that older dogs need gentle handling and lots of quiet time to relax.

Enjoys gentle on-lead walks: Pepper is good on the lead, doesn’t pull, and she is fine when meeting other dogs. Pepper stays on her lead for walks as we were told that she will run away if let off. Her foster carers have been working on her recall in an enclosed area, but are taking no chances. Pepper has a relaxed attitude to exercise but she can easily walk for at least half an hour, two or three times a day. She is quite chilled though and in no rush to leave the comforts of home.

Good in the car: Pepper is fine on car journeys.

Pepper’s favourite pastimes: Relaxing, snuggling and eating.

Pepper’s ideal home: She would like a home where someone will be with her most of the time. A home where she won’t need to negotiate steps and stairs is needed as her owner’s family told us that Pepper cannot climb stairs. Her foster carers live in a bungalow and only have a few steps in the garden, so Pepper has been fine there. She is happy to see visitors to the home and will go over for a fuss. She is very calm and she doesn’t bark.

Sleeping arrangements: Pepper has her own bed where she sleeps at night. She also has free run of the bungalow.

Health notes: Pepper is neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. At her vet-check she was found to have no major health issues. Her blood test showed slightly raised kidney values, but nothing too unusual for a 14-year-old. Pepper has just had a dental, with 7 teeth removed. She has recovered nicely and is eating very well. She has gained some weight while in foster care. Pepper isn’t taking any medication. She is frightened at the vets but just needs calm reassurance to help her through the experience.

Foster carer’s summary: “Sweet, calm, loving and laid-back. Pepper is the sweetest girl – she just likes to snuggle and is such a joy to look after.”

If you would like to offer Pepper a permanent home, please read our Adoption Procedures for information about the adoption process. You can then contact the Oldies Club rehoming team as follows:

Email: rehome@oldies.org.uk for an application form.

Or phone 0844 586 8656, leaving a message including your email address, and we’ll email an application form.

Pepper can be rehomed anywhere on the UK mainland – the closer to her foster home the better – subject to a satisfactory home visit. Note that you will be required to travel to the foster home to collect her.

If you would love to offer a home to an oldie but your circumstances aren’t suitable, perhaps you would be kind enough to sponsor one of the special oldies we are caring for that, due to health problems, are unlikely to be offered a permanent home.
