29.6.10  We have just heard the sad news about Arctic.  The family who rescued her had decided to keep her as there had been very little interest but very sadly Arctic died last week.  At least she had love and care for the last part of her life.  Run free, Arctic.

Arctic is a nine year old female Siberian Husky who was rescued from a very sad situation. The family who rescued her have spent time helping her to recover and she’s been vet checked and vaccinated and is now looking for the right home. She’s currently living in Crick, Northamptonshire.

Arctic has been with her current family for several weeks now and is a very different dog from when she first arrived. She was quite depressed and withdrawn and she still has some muscle wastage due to not being walked for a long time. Poor Arctic still hasn’t wagged her tail, but is much happier and brighter now.

This is what her family have to say about her;

Arctic loves routine and we get up at 7.15am every morning to give the dogs a walk. If we’re not downstairs by 7.20am, she gives us a gentle reminder that it is time to get up. She has a little walk for 20 minutes in the morning and about 40 minutes in the afternoon. On the vets advice we are building her up gradually because she still has a little muscle wastage due to getting no exercise. She could previously only manage about 15 minutes of walking before getting tired so she’s improved greatly.

Arctic needs to be walked on an extendable lead and normally this would be because of her breed, but she does not have the energy or the inclination to chase prey. However, she is a little hard of hearing so wouldn’t have very good recall and is therefore safer being on a lead. She walks extremely well for a husky and doesn’t pull at all, but walks beautifully to heal and never strays far from you. When it’s time for walkies she gets quite excited and pads from side to side! She enjoys travelling in the car too and likes to look out of the back window until she gets bored and lies down.

Arctic lives alongside my loopy Labrador and my collie (both bitches) with no problems whatsoever and she’s got along fine with all other dogs she’s met so far. She seems to be more people orientated though and loves company. She’s been absolutely fine with all the people she’s met, including children around the age of 5, although we think that a calmer child-free household would be better for her, or one with older teenage children.

Arctic’s ideal home would be one where there is somebody around for most of the day. After having little or no company for a very long time, it would be nice for her to have a lot of interaction. She’s currently left with our other two dogs for 4.5 hours while we work, but this is probably too long for her. She settles down, but does cry a little at first as she’s realised how lovely it is having company.

This lovely dog has been sadly let down, yet she hasn’t shown any nastiness or aggression. She was a little head shy at first and would flinch and shut her eyes when you moved to stroke her head, but she’s building up her trust now.

Arctic has a clear heart and lungs and she’s been vaccinated. Her ears are extremely clean, but unfortunately she is a little hard of hearing, probably due to her age. She can hear loud noises so to get her attention I clap. She was an angel on the vets table; after being prodded and poked, she didn’t make a sound and behaved impeccably.
