3/5/12 Very sad news today from a Maxicare volunteer: “Handsome Matthew passed away today in the arms of Maxicare Staff who were his family and his friends. He was fighting cancer but unexpectedly took a turn for the worse. So devastating as he spent almost his whole life with them. Run Free” :(

Update 10/10/11 Anyone who regularly checks Matthew’s page for news will know he’s been on our website for a long time, so we thought we’d update with a few words from one of the Maxicare staff .. Lovely Matthew is never fazed by the busy routine at the rescue and knows that the volunteers will always make time for a fuss every day. Literally thousands of desperate needy dogs have passed through while he watches and waits for someone with that little bit of “X factor” sparkle so he can at last have a home of his very own. Matthew simply needs someone to fall in love with him because once you’re under his spell he’s really quite a simple little guy, he just wants to be yours, all yours!! He’s “that dog who gets under your skin” … a “little person” of a dog and I so wish I could see him in a home.

Matthew the 11 year old English Bull Terrier X is a loveable, happy-go-lucky lad, but due to not liking other animals, he’s not been able to find a new home and has been at Animals in Need – Maxicare in Northamptonshire, since he was six months old! That’s 10 years. :( Poor Matthew.

Matthew lives in his own caravan at the rescue and he watches TV most of the day. Matthew cannot live with any other animals, however he will ignore them if he is on a walk.

In the right home, Matthew would be an absolute doddle to care for as he’s very low maintenance and, once he’s had a walk and a play, he’s happy to snooze the day away. He just needs a home where he’s the only animal and preferably where he can be exercised away from other animals. Perhaps you have a large, secure garden or quiet walks nearby?

Matthew is a very happy boy who will put a smile on your face. He loves people and so he will make a fabulous loyal friend and companion for whoever adopts him. He could live with teenage children and would really enjoy them playing with him as he’s still fairly energetic and has his cheeky moments — he will even pop over the jumps on Maxicare’s agility course!

As he’s been in rescue for such a long time, Matthew will need to be allowed plenty of time to adjust to a new home, and so prospective owners will need to be committed and prepared to be patient with him. Their reward will be the companionship of an old boy who really needs their help and will always be thankful for their kindness.

Matthew is a firm favourite with the kennel staff and dog walkers alike and his number one fan would dearly love to take him home but she can’t as she has two other dogs. This is what she has to say about her beloved Matthew:

“Matthew is a charismatic chap who adores a fuss and will do anything for a treat, he’ll even jump over the agility fences for one of his favourite treats!! He enjoys a run around and really loves people (especially when they’re rubbing his belly) however, Matthew doesn’t like any other animals at all.

Because of his intolerance of other animals, Matthew has been disregarded by people and he’s been looking for a home for a very long time. This is a huge shame because, in the right hands of an experienced owner, he would make a fantastic companion. He’s a very low maintenance boy who once exercised, will happily lounge around in his bed just letting the world go by.

Matthew really does deserve a warm, comfy and loving home where he can spend his retirement. He’s an adorable lad who just needs to be given a chance!”
