14/3/11 Extremely sad news about Deez – he has suffered a gastric torsion and died. You are in our thoughts special big guy. :(

————-

Deez, formerly known as Diesel, is a gorgeous, huge 8 year old St. Bernard cross who is being rehomed via Iron Mountain Dog Rescue. What he’s crossed with is a mystery, but the rescue suspects it could be a hippo!

Let’s put it like this: you wouldn’t want to get in the way when Deez gives his paw for a biscuit. :)

On a serious note, poor Deez has been waiting for a new home for a few months now. He was in a foster home for a while but is now in kennels. Iron Mountain will be happy to consider either a permanent home or a foster home for Deez, anywhere in the UK. He did have a home offer but unfortunately a serious illness in the family meant that they couldn’t go through with the adoption at that time.

Deez loves people and deplores violence of all kinds. The poor lad was abused as a youngster, so loud noises or raised voices can scare him. He therefore needs a quiet home where any children are older sensible ones. Although a big boy, he is quite shy.

Deez is described as a massive steamroller of a dog – a huge lad that goes nowhere fast but seems to have no brakes! To give safe control, Deez needs to be walked on a headcollar. He is used to getting his own way but responds very quickly to firm but kind handling. Deez will do ANYTHING for food.

Deez is blind in one eye and doesn’t like being taken by surprise – it scares him, he doesn’t react aggressively. He needs careful introductions to other dogs but could live with a calm dog if the relationship was managed sensibly.

He sleeps a lot and doesn’t need much exercise – just enough to keep his body trim, muscles firm and mind stimulated. He is utterly loyal and very affectionate. He’s a cuddly boy and he bonds quickly with new people.

Iron Mountain would like to find Deez a permanent or foster home with breed-savvy people who are used to working with the passively bossy end of the behaviour spectrum (no outward aggression, but he will manipulate you with charm given the chance). Iron Mountain insist that Deez must not be allowed on furniture and must not be allowed to greet visitors on his own terms. Deez is perfectly happy in a crate and views it as his calm space. Iron Mountain will supply Deez’s food for a long-term foster home.
