Update 5 August 2011: – Larry very sadly passed away this week :( His heart gave out on him. Our thoughts are with Larry’s family, who took such great care of him when he came to Oldies Club. Sleep tight lovely boy.

Update 28 May 2011 – due to his age and various health concerns, Oldies Club has decided that lovely Larry should become a sponsor dog. His foster family are very happy to keep him with them permanently, so he will stay with them, with Oldies Club continuing to cover his vet bills.

All photos on this page, except for the one of Larry at the pound, are thanks to John Wellings who very kindly volunteered his time to photograph Larry. Thank you John, the photographs are wonderful!

Larry is a simply irresistible 15 year old Sheltie x Collie who came into our care from a pound where he would otherwise have been put to sleep. He was in very poor condition when he arrived with us.

As you can see in these fabulous photos, Larry is looking very spick and span now, but when he arrived with us he looked pretty pitiful. This is him leaving the pound:

Sad Larry, starting on the journey to his new life

Settled quite quickly: Larry settled at his foster home within a few days. He didn’t eat for the first day though and he had a few weeing accidents in the house at first, but he had been through so much that it’s understandable that he was unsettled. He’s clean now though unless you don’t let him out promptly when he asks. He is also well-behaved when his foster carers go out and leave him.

Good with dogs and children: Larry is good with dogs but Oldies Club decided he’d prefer to either live on his own or with a gentle dog. He does tend to get under other dogs’ feet so he wouldn’t want to be trodden on by a big dog. He now shares his home with another older dog.

Enjoys a short, gentle walk: Larry does enjoy a short walk but he isn’t up to going far and is equally happy with a sniff around the garden some days. Larry is OK in the car.

Larry’s favourite pastimes: Sleeping; Eating; Having an occasional run around the garden when the mood takes him.

Larry’s dislikes: Nothing in particular.

Larry likes his home comforts, tasty meals, plenty of peace and a nice garden to potter in :)

Larry is quite a frail old lad but, thanks to the dedication of his foster carers, he is in much better condition than when he came into our care. He is virtually blind, and he has arthritis in his hips for which he takes Metacam and the joint supplement Synoquin.

Larry’s new Mum & Dad say that Larry: is a lovely old chap, very docile and quiet. He loves his food and will grab fingers but is so gentle that it doesn’t hurt! He’s not a great one for fuss and cuddles, although he does sometimes get underfoot. He likes to mooch about and have a nice sleep on his bed.

If you would love to offer a home to an oldie but your circumstances aren’t suitable, perhaps you would be kind enough to sponsor Larry or one of the special oldies we are caring for that, due to health problems, are unlikely to be offered a permanent home.
