27/11/18 – We have very sad news of little Toby. His health hasn’t been good of late and he sadly became so poorly that he has now had to be put to sleep. We would like to thank his foster carers for the wonderful care they have given Toby since he came into rescue. Sleep tight now, special little Toby.

Toby is an adorable 15 year old Jack Russell Terrier boy who came into the Oldies Club dog rescue because his owner had moved to assisted living accommodation where dogs aren’t allowed. Toby is in an Oldies Club foster home near Llanelli, Carmarthenshire, waiting for someone to offer him a quiet, permanent home to relax in.
Luxuriating in foster care: Toby took quite a while to settle at his foster home, but he is thoroughly enjoying his time there and he spends most of each day snoozing in a very comfortable antique chair. Toby hopes to have similar levels of luxury and comfort in his new home!
Loves to have company: We were told by Toby’s previous family that he was fine to be left on his own for a while. His foster carers haven’t had cause to leave Toby, but they feel that he would fret if left on his own as he cries if no-one is close by. They therefore recommend that Toby goes to a home where he will rarely need to be left, especially as he needs to go out for wees quite often. He stands in front of you, giving you a hard stare, to let you know he wants to go out.
Needs to be your only pet: Toby would like a home where he is your only dog and where there are no cats.
Good with older visiting children: Toby has never lived with children, and it is probably a little late in his life for him to begin to do so, but he would be fine about having older children visit his home. He was good with teenage girls that visited his foster home for the day.
Short walks only: Toby likes short walks – about 20-30 minutes twice per day. In cold weather, once he has done the essentials, he wants to return home, but he does enjoy exploring the garden on a sunny day. He is good on the lead and, as he is deaf, he always stays on his lead on walks.
Good in the car: Yes he is!
Toby’s favourite pastimes: Toby likes to sleep for a lot of the day – he loves his little cushion and blankets to sleep on. He also likes to look out of the window. On nice days he enjoys being out in the garden and he successfully claimed his foster carer’s deckchair. He enjoys greeting visitors to the home. At night he likes to be tucked up before his foster carers go to bed – it’s part of his routine. Toby doesn’t know how to play with toys but he loves having his ear scratched and a stroke.
Toby’s dislikes: Toby is used to living as an only dog with an elderly person and so he is not used to being around other dogs and he doesn’t seem to like them, except for a little dachshund he once met. Toby does have a bad back so perhaps he is frightened of being hurt by other dogs.
Toby’s ideal home: Toby simply wants to be cosseted. He’d be ideal for a retired person or couple who can give him regular short walks; someone with time and patience who will keep him warm and give him lots of tender loving care. As he only has a few teeth, Toby can only eat soft meat, cut up small. He has two meals per day, and if you are a couple of minutes late, he will bark to remind you! He needs a garden so that he can enjoy pottering in and out on warm days. He does have occasional accidents, so hard flooring would be ideal.
Health notes: Toby is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, wormed and flea treated. He is deaf and has cataracts. Toby has had a dental and has very few teeth left. He has daily Metacam for spondylitis. He is starting to show some early signs of what seems to be doggy dementia, which are more apparent at night time. His foster carer is monitoring ready to discuss with the vet.

This is because of his bad back. When he first came to us he shook with the pain. A basket would be too harsh. He likes to be stroked a little, but be careful of his poorly back. Food soft, cut up small. He is a gorgeous dog who is simply at the tea-time of life. Looked after well, he has many good years ahead of him.”

Toby can be rehomed anywhere on the UK mainland, subject to a satisfactory home visit, but note that you will be required to travel to the foster home to meet him.
