1/9/18 – Rio has been adopted by his foster carer!

Rio is an adorable 14 year old Patterdale Terrier x Lakeland Terrier boy who has come back into the Oldies Club dog rescue after 3 years in his adoptive home due to his adopter’s ill health. Rio is in a foster home in Derby, waiting for someone to offer him a new permanent home.

Settled well in foster care: Rio seemed to settle at his foster home really quickly, but then after a few weeks he became noticeably more playful, so he must have been gradually relaxing and feeling happier during that time.

Can be left for a few hours: Rio is fine to be left on his own for a few hours, but he is very pleased to see you return home. He might be OK to live with a part-time worker but it wouldn’t be fair for him to be on his own most of the day, and he does need to be let out to wee quite often.

Needs to be an only dog: Rio prefers to be left alone by other dogs and can get a bit stroppy with them. He needs to be the only dog in his new home.

Needs a home without cats: Rio hasn’t been around cats much but he does have a growl when he sees them.

Very good with children: Rio is very affectionate and playful and is great with children. He hasn’t met any very young children since coming into foster care but he has been fine with an 11 year old and should be fine with children a little younger than that.

Enjoys on lead walks with plenty of sniffing: Rio is only used to having on-lead walks and he likes to take his time and stop often. His foster carers tried letting him off the lead but he has poor recall and will chase other dogs, so he’s best kept on the lead. He’s currently having two walks per day of about 20-30 minutes each. He likes to drink plenty on walks so his foster carers take water along with them.

Very good traveller: Rio is very good in the car and he has also been on a couple of train journeys and was very good on the train too. Marvellous!

Rio’s favourite pastimes: He likes playing with balls and toys, but he does like to destroy some of them. He also loves playing keepy-uppy with a balloon, but you have to be careful as he will want to destroy the balloon and you obviously don’t want him to choke! After enjoying a little game he then likes to have a good long snooze.

Rio’s dislikes: At his foster home, Rio reacts to the trumpet and the lawn mower! His foster carers can’t tell if he is frightened or just excited. He does not want to go away from the noise but will bark and try to attack the source.

Rio’s ideal home: He seems to enjoy attention and playing so would probably appreciate a reasonably active home, as long as he is allowed peace quiet so that he can sleep a lot too. When he needs to go out for a wee, he doesn’t ask very obviously, so his new owners will need to make sure they let him outside regularly, and learn his subtle clues.

Health notes: Rio is neutered, vaccinated and microchipped and has been wormed and flea treated. At his recent check-up, the vet noticed that his left hind leg is a little weaker than the right, and sometimes shakes, which may be a neurological problem. He can shake a lot generally. He may also have some reduced vision due to cataracts. He apparently has a history of pneumonia which has left him with reduced lung function. None of this appears to prevent him thoroughly enjoying life.

Rio’s foster carer describes Rio as: Fun, cheeky, cuddly and fluffy!
