24/11/19 – Ruby has found an incredibly wonderful home after 7 years at Freshfields!

Ruby is an 8-year-old Terrier who is at Freshfields Animal Rescue in Liverpool, waiting for a special person to offer her a kind and understanding home without children and where Ruby will be your only pet.

Ruby was originally with Freshfields as a young puppy and was quickly adopted, but she was returned at 10 months old due to a change in her owner’s circumstances. As Ruby needs a special home, she has been waiting at Freshfields since then.

Ruby is a fantastic little girl who is full of character and she makes Freshfields people laugh with her funny, quirky ways. However, some of Ruby’s behaviour indicates that she may have mild brain damage, but this is only speculation as she is a healthy girl physically. When she is uncomfortable with a situation, Ruby will try to bite. She doesn’t like to be over-handled and even if she may appear to be happy being fussed initially, she can become unsettled and react defensively. Ruby has never been mistreated though and seems to have been this way since she was a puppy.

Staff and volunteers have got to know Ruby well over the years and can read her body language, so avoid putting her in situations where she feels uncomfortable or stressed. Ruby doesn’t seem to process things the way other dogs do and when she doesn’t understand something she will let you know. As Ruby has grown older, she has become more settled and she is enjoying strokes and affection more than she used to.

Freshfields genuinely adore Ruby as she is very sweet-natured and cute and she makes your heart melt. She is a lazy girl who definitely doesn’t like early starts, so they leave her to wake up and tell them when she is ready for her first walk. They listen to and read Ruby’s signs, so have a good relationship with her, and never push her to do anything she doesn’t want to do. They just adapt around her and take things at Ruby’s pace throughout the day.

Ruby needs a very special home with someone experienced with this kind of dog. She needs an adult home free from visiting children and with no children planned for the future. Her new owner will need to make several trips to Freshfields to form a bond with Ruby before adoption, this will then progress to a slow introduction into your home, so please bear your location in mind.

Ruby can be reactive towards other dogs and needs to be your only pet. She has watery eyes but cannot have eye drops as she becomes too upset. She is due x-rays on her legs in June 2019 – Freshfields can give more information about this.

Ruby is a wonderful girl and will be an entertaining and sweet dog if she is given the chance in the right home. She needs a calm, confident and sensible owner who will respect that she doesn’t process things or see the world in the same way as most dogs do.

Could you be the really lovely, experienced person that Ruby is hoping to meet?
