16/11/2022 – Wonderful news for Ben – he’s gone off to his new home!

—————-

Absolutely cute Ben is a Papillon/Jack Russell Terrier Cross who came into Oldies Club rescue due to his owner being too ill to care for him. He is 16 years and 8 months old and is in a foster home in Ringwood, Hampshire, looking forward to finding his perfect forever home soon.

At home: Ben made himself at home straight away and his foster carers didn’t have any problems at all. He is fine to be left alone for a few hours and does not whine or bark, but he would not like to live with full-time workers.

Okay with dogs: Ben is friendly with most dogs. He does growl at them if they become over-friendly and won’t leave him alone. It’s not sure how he would get on living with another dog. However, if there were another in the home, it would probably need to be an older dog as Ben likes a quiet life!

No to cats: Ben chases cats and it’s not known if he could live with a dog-savvy one.

Loves children: Ben loves children and makes a bee-line for them when he is out. He gets lots of strokes and rolls over on his back. He would probably be happy with children of any age and has no teeth!

Out and about: Ben is good on the lead. His recall isn’t good as he has very selective hearing. However, he doesn’t stray very far and is usually always in sight and doesn’t run off. He goes out about 5 times a day for about 10 minutes each time. He gets really excited at the prospect of a walk and runs round in circles. When he wants to go out, he makes it known. At the end of the walk he is tired. It’s more about quantity than length.

Good in the car: Ben is fine in the car on the few occasions that he has been in one. He settled down quickly and went to sleep.

Ben’s favourite pastimes: Walks. He doesn’t really play much; toys have limited interest to him and his carers have tried balls and squeaky toys. He plays for a few minutes then gets bored and goes to lay down and sleep in his basket.

Dislikes: Ben hates having his claws trimmed and kicks up a fuss. He doesn’t seem to fear anything and loud noises don’t cause a problem.

Ben’s ideal home: He would be happy anywhere and he likes to have a quiet spot/room. He settles down quickly and enjoys company, however he isn’t an attention seeking dog. He sleeps a lot and his bed is in the corner of the main bedroom by the radiator. He is either asleep, eating or out on a walk and is very easy to care for.

Health notes: Ben is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, wormed and flea-treated. He has a grade 3-4 heart murmur and is on Vetmedin (Pimobendan) tablets. He has 1½ tablets morning and night with his food. This will be ongoing. He also takes Pronefra liquid that is dropped onto his food for his kidney disease (stage 2-4), and he will potentially require intermittent blood tests to check that it isn’t getting worse. He eats Royal Canin renal food to help.

Ben has had all his teeth removed so his tongue hangs out, but this adds to his character and it seems any children/adults he meets seem to like him even more.

More from his foster carer: “Ben is independent, cheerful, friendly and mellow. He is a lovely dog and deserves a wonderful home. He is very easy to care for and doesn’t have any nastiness about him. Ben has made lots of friends in the short time that we have had him and everyone stops and gives him a pat. He is house-trained but doesn’t like to defecate in his own garden.”

If you would like to offer super cute Ben a permanent home, please read our Adoption Procedures for information about the adoption process. You can then contact an Oldies Club rehoming co-ordinator as follows:

Email: rehome@oldies.org.uk

Ben can be rehomed anywhere on the UK mainland – the closer to his foster home the better though, subject to a satisfactory home visit. Note that you will be required to travel to the foster home to collect him.

If you would love to offer a home to an oldie but your circumstances aren’t suitable, perhaps you would be kind enough to sponsor one of the special oldies we are caring for that, due to health problems, are unlikely to be offered a permanent home.
