6/9/22 Sweet Candy has found a home!

Candy is a 12 year old Jack Russell Terrier who is with Wonky Pets Rescue in a foster home in Swadlincote, South Derbyshire, but can be rehomed further afield.

Pretty Candy found herself in kennels after her owner passed away. She then moved to Wonky Pets via the dog warden. Candy was in a poor state, but after the dedication of Wonky Pets, and the vet care described further down the page, she had been transformed into a bright and happy girl who can’t wait to go off to a wonderful new home and begin the next chapter of her life!

Candy is a lovely little dog and will make a great companion for someone looking for an only pet. She has been in foster with other dogs and gets on OK with them most of the time, but she doesn’t really want other dogs around her and will nip at them if they come too close. She would be far happier having all the attention to herself. She isn’t suited to living with cats or small furries she has a proper terrier instinct where they are concerned.

Candy loves a fuss and will sit up like a meerkat on her bottom for a treat – she is a comical little lady. She is housetrained and sleeps quietly downstairs at night without any trouble. She travels well in the car and loves her little walks. She is a bit strong on the lead so needs someone fit and able enough to hold her and help her build back up to good-length walks. She does like to steal the post from the front door if you don’t get there first, so she’ll help you keep fit too. :)

It is thought that Candy isn’t used to living with children, so needs an adult home, but she would be fine with respectful visiting children. She needs a nice secure garden to potter in as she loves to lie out in the sun.

Candy arrived in rescue with terribly sore and inflamed skin and it became apparent that she has some sensitivities, which the hot weather doesn’t help either. She has been prescribed Apoquel, alongside regular medicated baths and a grain-free diet. This has all made a massive difference to Candy. She may need to stay on them longer term, or things may settle once the cooler weather comes. She will be rehomed with at least a month’s supply of Apoquel.

Candy also arrived quite stiff and lame, with a few lumps and bumps. She has now been spayed and had two lumps removed, which were benign, and had x-rays of her rear leg which revealed long-standing damage to her cruciate ligament. After discussion with the vet she has been having monthly injections of Librela, which is fantastic for alleviating pain associated with arthritis in dogs, alongside weekly acupuncture sessions which she has enjoyed and have been a massive benefit. She has also been on a diet as she arrived quite overweight. Candy is now like a different dog!

The vet has suggested she will benefit from continuing acupuncture sessions every 6 weeks or so as they help her so much. If she is rehomed locally to Swadlincote Wonkey Pets are happy to continue to pay for these sessions with their vet for as long as she needs them. Candy is spayed, microchipped, flea and worm treated and had her 1st vaccination. She will be rehomed with 5 weeks free pet insurance.

She is fostered in Swadlincote, Derbyshire but can be rehomed further afield to the right home, subject to homecheck and Wonky Pets donation of £195.
