Murphy is a loving 8-year-old Collie boy who is looking for a new home due to a change in his owner’s personal circumstances. He is currently in Grange-over-Sands, Cumbria, where he is waiting for his forever home to be found.

Murphy is looking for a home where he can be the only dog. He can be anxious and reactive around other dogs, particularly if they bark at him first or if he perceives them as a threat. However, with gentle and careful introductions, he has mixed well with many dogs. He has never lived with cats, so it’s unclear how he would cope living alongside one, although he does show some interest in moggies he meets on his walks.

Murphy is a truly lovely boy who would thrive in a calm, understanding home where he can feel safe and secure.

Making new human friends is Murphy’s favourite thing. He is a playful soul who loves having fun. As with all collies, he is very intelligent and enjoys brain games, learning new tricks, and being obedient.

Murphy currently lives with children and is gentle and affectionate with them. He has lived alongside an 8-month-old baby since birth and is described as brilliant around young children.

He is well behaved when left on his own and settles nicely for a few hours, currently being left for up to 4–6 hours at a time.

For a collie, Murphy is less active than you might expect. He is happy with around 30 minutes to 1 hour of exercise per day and is then content to return home for a good snooze.

Murphy travels well in the car and is generally quiet while being driven. The exception is when the rear wiper is switched on, which causes him to bark. He may also bark briefly when arriving somewhere and the car comes to a stop.

Murphy is noise-averse and can be frightened by loud sounds such as fireworks, motorbikes, and banging noises like cars driving over manhole covers. A quiet and settled home environment would suit Murphy best, where he can feel safe and relaxed.

Medical Notes – Murphy is neutured. He also has a Ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt to treat Hydrocephalus & Syringomyelia, a condition which he was born with and started showing symptoms at 4 years old. He had the shunt fitted in September 2021 and corrective surgery in November 2022 after a fall dislodged the shunt. Whilst the shunt has resolved his symptoms, he can become tired and stumbles if he overexerts himself. Any rough play or challenging terrain is currently avoided which may risk his shunt. Murphy’s medical condition isn’t noticeable and doesn’t require ongoing medication but it does limit his physical abilities

Murphy is being rehomed privately by his owner, who has confirmed she will take Murphy back if his new home doesn’t work out for any reason. Prospective adopters will be carefully homechecked.
