Handsome Tug came into the care of Starfish Dog Rescue after spending his life as a working gun dog until he came into the rescue’s care. It was felt that this should be his last season and it was time for him to retire. He is now being fostered in an adult home with two other dogs in Gloucestershire.

Tug is a gorgeous, liver and white, 10-year-old Springer Spaniel who previously lived in an outdoor kennel with seven other male dogs. He did not have good teeth and a few were infected, so he has had a dental and teeth removed, been neutered and started a new course of vaccinations.

Now recovered from his Vet treatment, Tug has settled into home life; like most Spaniels, he is an extremely loving dog and loves all the attention home living has to offer, including humans on tap and home comforts. He just loves sausages as you can see here. In the home, he is by your side as long as you are around but does sleep well at night in the utility room.

Tug adores his walks in the countryside and is fabulous on and off-lead; he is an extremely active and fit dog. He loves chasing the ball and running around doing what Spaniels do best and could walk for miles as you can see here (there are more videos of him here. He also travels well.

Now his foster carer has got to know Tug better, she feels he will do better as an only dog. He is fine with the other dogs and fine meeting them outside, but actually has no interest in them or playing with them – he loves being loved and it’s you he wants. He will push the other dogs out of the way to get his fuss. This one-to-one attention is all new to him and he loves it.

Tug could easily become overly-attached because of this and has showed signs, which is not surprising as it’s something he has not been used to and likes. Therefore he would like people who are around a lot of the day but are savvy enough to know that he has to be left for his own confidence (he does not make a sound at night) but, during the day, if his foster mum goes upstairs he will start barking. She has been firm with him over this and not given in and he has responded well, but it could develop into separation issues without boundaries.

Tug’s house training has improved and he is completely clean at night. Obviously he had no idea when he first arrived, but this is being worked on and he is is improving every day. All Tug wants is his very own family now, a couple or person who is fit, active and able to give him the exercise and companionship he craves as an only dog and in the countryside preferably.
