Beautiful Lola is an 8-year-old German Shepherd in the care of Rescue Remedies. She’s at their boarding kennels near Gatwick on the Surrey/West Sussex border. She’s had some respite foster stays to get her away from the stress of kennels and has proven to be a gentle and loving lady, who is good with children.

Lola’s owner passed away and there was no family to take her on. She was still grieving when she first had a foster stay and was very anxious about people leaving, even just walking out of the room! On the first night, she did settle in her bed downstairs but only once she knew exactly where everyone else in the house was. She’s relaxed a lot since then, even in kennels.

One volunteer dog walker said, “I took Lola out today. She barked when I arrived at her kennel – I think she was telling me it was her turn for a walk. She was calm and easy to harness. She walked beautifully on the lead – no pulling at all. First we went to the paddock where she enjoyed playing with a ball. She loved getting some back scratches. We then went on a short walk via the poets hut for a cuddle.”

Another said, “Lola is lovely. I love sharing a walk with her. She walks well on the lead apart from the odd moment when she gets excited about a squirrel. Her attention is short lived and she is quickly back to enjoying her walk.”

Her temporary foster carer said, “Lola is back with us for a short respite. She was so excited to greet everyone as they came home one by one from school and work. She even greeted our hair dresser like a member of the family. There is a noticeable difference in her behaviour, in that she does not seem as anxious when people leave the room.

“She continues to harass our chickens with them egging her on knowing she cannot reach them. We encountered a cat in her path yesterday who was not moving for anybody, well Lola did not like that and ensured all the surrounding houses knew.

“She barks and tries to get out the door when people leave, but like before soon settles. She tries to climb on my lap for cuddles, I gently decline this kind offer. She likes her food but does not seem to be overly driven by it, she will leave her bowl if she thinks someone is trying to leave the house.

“She loves her ball and could play for an age. Lola absolutely adores humans, man, women or child she isn’t picky as long as you adore her also. So if you are a home bunny, retired, work from home, like a couple of short walks a day and lots of cuddles, Lola is the dog for you.”
