Ruby is a 12-year-old Yorkshire Terrier x Poodle who came into rescue as her owner had moved to a care home. Ruby is in an Oldies Club foster home in Ilkeston, Derbyshire.

Doing well in foster care: Ruby took about a week to settle into the routine at her foster home.

OK to be left for short periods: Ruby has been fine when left in the company of the resident dog while her foster carers have popped out for an hour or two. We don’t know how she would be if she was left completely on her own though, and she really does love to be with her people. We are therefore looking for a home with people who don’t go out to work, where Ruby can have all the care and companionship she loves.

Great with dogs: Ruby is very good with other dogs and is getting on well with the resident female dog.

Not used to cats: As Ruby has no experience of cats, we are looking for a cat-free home for her.

Good with small pets: Ruby has been fine with the resident budgie and hamster.

Older children only: Ruby likes her own space, on her own terms, and wouldn’t want to be disturbed by young children. She should be fine with sensible children aged 11+, who are old enough to understand her need for peace and quiet.

Enjoys moderate walks: She likes to get out and about and is good on the lead. Her recall hasn’t been tested much, but it seems likely that she won’t go too far from you and will come back when called. She is happy with two walks per day of about 30 minutes each walk. She will try to do more than that, but her age then catches up with her!

Good in the car: Ruby loves a trip out in the car and she likes to look out of the window. She’s been on caravan holidays with her foster carers too and thoroughly enjoyed herself.

Ruby’s favourite pastimes: She’s obsessed with balls, loves sleeping, and enjoys being with her people. She also likes to wipe her own feet (she was taught “wipe feet” by her previous owner): this girl obviously wants to look her best at all times.

Ruby’s dislikes: When she first came into rescue, Ruby didn’t like being told “No” and she would growl and try to snap. But with some time and patience, she has become much better now.

Ruby’s ideal home: A home with active older people who are home most of the time would be perfect for Ruby. She needs a home with a garden as she does enjoy being outside. You will need to be happy for her to sleep on the bed with you at night. During the day she likes to nap on the sofa or chair, and sometimes in her own bed. Oh, and if you have a caravan to take her for holidays, that would be splendid!

Health notes: Ruby is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, wormed and flea-treated. We were told that she used to have recurrent ear infections, but since being groomed and having her ears plucked, she hasn’t had a problem. She is missing a few teeth but the remaining ones have been scaled and are now in a good state.

Ruby’s foster carer tells us:Ruby is a ball-obsessed, chilled-out sweety. She is a happy little dog who defies her age. We all love her.

If you would love to offer a home to an oldie but your circumstances aren’t suitable, perhaps you would be kind enough to sponsor one of the special oldies we are caring for that, due to health problems, are unlikely to be offered a permanent home.
