17.8.2014 Sadly this beautiful Angel has had to be put to sleep. She was well loved and had found her perfect home, so our deepest sympathies go out to her wonderful owners. Angel knew such happiness in her final years and we all hope that they get some comfort from that.

9/2/13 Beautiful Angel has gone to her new home. We hope she has a wonderful time there!

Angel is a beautiful 10 year old female white German Shepherd Dog who came into Oldies Club care due to her owner’s ill health. Angel is in an Oldies Club foster home in Milton Keynes, Bucks, waiting for someone to offer her a permanent home.

Settled gradually: It took Angel a few weeks to settle at her foster home as she found the change of people and environment rather stressful. She will need calm, patient adopters who will give her plenty of time to settle at her new home.

Can be left for a few hours: Angel can be left for a few hours. She barks when you leave but settles within about a minute. She would be fine to live with a part-time worker but she is quite clingy and so it wouldn’t be fair for her to be left for full-time hours.

Good with dogs: Angel is in foster with a very calm, laid back dog. Angel is good with dogs she meets but will ‘cling’ to another dog in the home for reassurance so can only live with a dog that would tolerate this. She’s respectful of other dogs’ food but won’t allow another dog to pinch hers – that’s only fair though!

Can’t live with cats: Angel will chase cats so can’t live with them.

Very good with children: Angel is very gentle with children and doesn’t seem bothered by them. Children would need to be old enough to understand that they mustn’t climb on or pull at Angel. She has been great with children of 3 years and up that are used to dogs.

Enjoys walks: Angel is being walked on a gentle leader/halti, as she sometimes pulls on the lead, particularly at the start of a walk and when she wants to sniff something. Angel has proved to be good off lead in an open space, but if she sees another dog she’ll run over to it, which of course is bad manners, so she’s put back on the lead if an unknown dog is around. Angel likes two 20-30 minute walks per day, mostly at a brisk pace.

Here is a short video of Angel enjoying a walk:

Not great in the car: Angel is happy to jump in the boot of an estate car, and travels behind a sturdy dog guard, but after 5 minutes or so she starts whining or barking, and pacing. Her foster carer is trying a few things to keep her calm.

Angel’s favourite pastimes: Angel loves being brushed and to just be with you getting a fuss. Walkies are also very exciting for her. She greets strangers politely, wanting to sniff them, and when she’s done that she’ll ask them for a fuss. She sits and gives a paw for treats, but she’s not at all interested in toys.

Angel’s dislikes: Being in a different room to you during the day if you are home – she’ll cry to be with you but is OK at night, or if you’re out. She barks when someone leaves the home but settles quickly after you’ve closed the door. She doesn’t like having a bath at all, but this is managed by being calm but firm, and the use of plenty of choccy drops! Fireworks don’t seem to bother her.

Angel’s perfect home: Angel needs a home with not too many comings and goings, where she can be with her owner wherever they are in the house, and with little car travel required. She can’t live with cats. Angel doesn’t get on the sofa and she settles in the kitchen at night behind a stairgate. She likes a high-sided bed to curl up in as it’s cosy, and she doesn’t do sprawling as it’s not dignified enough for her!

Health notes: Angel is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, wormed and flea treated. She has slight arthritis in her elbows and has just started taking Rimadyl and is doing well on it. She has had a urine test which showed that her kidneys are fine.

Foster carer’s summary of Angel:Obedient, Loyal, Devoted, Beautiful. Angel needs time to adjust to a new environment, owner and routine. She was very stressed by her move into foster and is likely be the same when she moves to her forever home. We used a comfort T-shirt, Rescue Remedy and a doggy lullaby CD, but most importantly calmness, patience, and didn’t fuss over her when she was in a state of unease as this would only have reinforced the feeling that there was something to be worried about. Angel needs to be allowed time and not be rushed into doing new things. Just be there for her and she’ll slowly but surely start to relax.”

If you would love to offer a home to an oldie but your circumstances aren’t suitable, perhaps you would be kind enough to sponsor one of the special oldies we are caring for that, due to health problems, are unlikely to be offered a permanent home.
