Kilo (Ark, Lincolnshire coast)

11/6/12 – We just had this sad update from the Ark: Kilo collapsed and has had to be put to sleep. He didn’t respond to treatment and the vet said there was nothing more he could do and he had no quality of life. Sue and Laura, the manager and assistant manager at the Ark were with him and cuddling him when he died. There was a lady who was interested in adopting him but a home came just too late for the poor old boy :(

This is Kilo, a gorgeous 10 year old German Shepherd boy. Kilo has been waiting for over a year at the Ark on the Lincolnshire coast. He was with his best friend, Scooby, waiting for someone to offer them a home together as they were so closely bonded, but tragically, Scooby died this week and Kilo is now all alone.

This is the heartbreaking update we received from the Ark: “Just to let you know that we lost Scooby of Kilo and Scooby today. He went down on his legs this morning and couldn’t get up. He was taken to the vet but was too far gone sadly. His organs were failing due to old age and there was no other choice than to let him go, which he did in the arms of Sue and Laura, manager and assistant manager. Laura took the blanket he was wrapped in and gave it to Kilo who lay on it and howled quietly. It was as if he knew he’d lost Scooby.

That sad update is the reason why we decided to highlight Kilo’s plight. We are appealing for a special person to offer Kilo a new home as soon as possible.

Kilo and Scooby were the pride and joy of their late owner, but their owner became terminally ill and they found themselves at the Ark. Pairs of large older dogs are difficult to find homes for and this is why Kilo is still waiting. Hopefully now that he is on his own, his wait is almost over.

Kilo is very good around people and would love a home where he can go out and about and do things with you. He is lively and loves to go for walks. He can be excitable but is very friendly and soft and just wants some love and attention.

Kilo could probably live with another dog, as long as they were introduced carefully. Kilo was the dominant one with Scooby and so it’s likely he would want to be in charge of a new friend. Kilo and Scooby used to be fed separately to prevent any spats over food. Kilo is fine with other dogs in the house but not always with ones he meets out on walks, so he is best kept on the lead, especially as he has poor recall.

Kilo isn’t used to living with children so would be better in an adult home, but he would be fine with visiting children. He isn’t used to cats. He is housetrained and, in the company of Scooby, he used to be fine to be left for a reasonable time. They used to have the run of the house and slept in their own beds. Kilo enjoys playing with toys and chewing on rawhide chews.

Kilo is in good health for his age and is neutered and vaccinated. His ideal new owner will have some experience of large breeds and will be happy to work on Kilo’s onlead walking and recall.

A final message from the Ark: “Kilo is quiet now and seems fairly calm, but he obviously needs a new home more than ever. He’s missing Scooby but coping, but all he knew before the Ark was the company of Scooby and the love of his owner who adored his dogs and gave them so much care and love. He needs that love and companionship again in a home for his twilight years.”
