9/5/18 – Syd has gone to his new home!
—————

Super Syd is an 11 year old Border Collie boy who came into the Oldies Club dog rescue after his owner sadly passed away. He’s in a foster home in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, waiting for someone to offer him a permanent home.

Note that Syd is quite a big lad for a Border Collie – he is 25 inches from the floor to the top of his back and he weighs 28kg (please excuse our mix of imperial and metric measurements!).

A happy boy in foster: It only took Syd about a day to settle in to his new surroundings and he was soon dozing contentedly.

Can be left for a few hours: Syd would like someone to be there for some of the day at least. He could maybe live with a part-time worker, as he can be left for up to 4 hours to philosophise and then be thrilled when you return!

Wants to be an only pet: Oldies Club were advised that Syd shouldn’t live with cats. He often finds other dogs to be troublesome on walks, especially medium to large ones. He’d like to be the only pet at home and get all the attention!

Good with children: There’s a 7 year old and an 11 year old in Syd’s foster family. He’s fine with them and pleased to meet their friends when they visit, so he should be happy living with dog savvy children.

Loves his walks: As with most collies, Syd’s walks are essential to him. At the moment, he has a short walk first thing then a longish lunch time walk (45mins to an hour), a short tea time walk and a little evening outing. Apart from getting any important business done, his keen collie intellect needs plenty of stimulation. He’s pretty good on the lead. He can pull if allowed but he will walk nicely beside you when he’s required to. He has good recall (naturally, being super clever!). As mentioned before, he’s not a fan of other dogs so walking him in a quiet place or at a quiet time of day is jolliest all round.

OK in the car: Syd behaves himself in the car but he doesn’t really settle. His foster carers have only taken him on short journeys and that’s probably plenty for him!

Syd’s favourite pastimes: Syd likes playing with his ball and he’s a pro when it comes to catching treats and snowballs. So clever!

Syd’s dislikes: He finds big, growling monsters a bit of a worry (i.e. motorbikes and loud cars).

Syd’s ideal home: He’s pretty laid back and cheerful so he’d fit in with a family where someone is around at least some of the day or he’d make a wonderful companion to an active retired person. Obviously, he’ll need a nice garden to potter in.

Health notes: Syd is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, flea/worm treated and healthy.

Syd’s foster carers say: “He is happy and loving. He’d be best placed with a family or person who has had dogs before, so he can relax knowing that his owner’s in charge, and he can just enjoy taking a back seat, following his owner’s lead (not the other way around!). He’s got a funny way of cocking his head quizzically to one side at times (haven’t managed to capture that on camera yet!) which is funny and very endearing. He’s just a lovely dog to have around the house, he loves to be around you (not in an under your feet way) but clearly enjoys having company around him.

If you would love to offer a home to an oldie but your circumstances aren’t suitable, perhaps you would be kind enough to sponsor one of the special oldies we are caring for that, due to health problems, are unlikely to be offered a permanent home.
