14/1/20 – Lovely Wilf has found a home!

Handsome Wilf came to Wonky Pets Rescue from the pound where he had been found as a stray and, sadly, no-one came looking for him. He is being cared for in a foster home in Swadlincote, Derbyshire, until his forever home comes along. Wilf will make the right dog-savvy, active person a really fabulous companion; he is a great boy.

Wilf is a 10 year old Collie Cross boy and he is still very fit and active. He absolutely loves to run, is full of energy, enjoys chasing his ball and is great at playing fetch. He is a bit of an anxious boy with new situations and, with people he doesn’t know, he will bark at them initially, but if he is ignored and allowed to come to them, he will be having a fuss within minutes. Once he builds a bond, he is a loving, affectionate boy.

Wilf is a typical Collie who has obviously has some training in his past. He is well-behaved, obedient, clean and good in the home. He enjoys his food and has no food issues around other dogs. He loves his walks and is quite strong on the lead, but he has really good recall so loves to chase a ball or toy when out for nice long country walks. Wilf will need a fit and active owner who can keep up with him. He travels really well in the car and will jump into the boot or crate ready for his next adventure.

Wilf has been absolutely great with other dogs and could happily share his new home with other neutered canines who would be kind to him. He is okay with cats but would give chase to a running cat, so felines in the home need to be very dog-savvy.

Wilf wasn’t happy at the vets the and doesn’t like being manhandled too much, so he needs an understanding dog-savvy and experienced owner who can read his body language and not put him in uncomfortable positions where he will be worried. Due to not knowing his background and his being a bit worried around things that are new, he would suit a home with no resident children under 14 years. He would be okay with sensible, gentle, visiting children who will respect his space. He is fine to be left alone for a few hours during the day as long as he has had a good walk.

Wilf is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and flea/worm treated. He will be rehomed with 5 weeks’ free pet insurance. He has also had a scale and polish so now has lovely fresh breath and clean teeth. He does have a grade 4 heart murmur which has been checked with a heart scan. He has a thickened mitral valve which is the commonest form of heart disease in dogs and is degenerative as they get older. As he is displaying no outward signs at the moment and is fit, he doesn’t need to start on any heart medication but it is something that will probably be needed in the future, so any new home needs to be aware of that and the implicated costs. Other than some age-related changes to his eyes giving a little cloudiness which doesn’t affect his eyesight, he is otherwise fit and well.
