1/2/23 – We are delighted to hear that Buddy’s owner received lots of interest in him as a result of his appearance on our website and he now has a lovely new home lined up to go to. Good boy, Buddy!

Who could resist that face! This very handsome boy is Buddy, an 8 year old Rhodesian Ridgeback x Labrador who is being rehomed privately by his owner due to a sad change of circumstances. Buddy is currently in Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire.

Gorgeous Buddy will be a wonderfully loyal friend to his new owner and he thrives on a good routine. Despite being a big lad (weighing about 35kg and standing about 60cm high) he is an absolute dream to walk. What a good boy!

Although Buddy has spent most of his life as an only pet, he did once live with an old, female Jack Russell. He should be OK to live with a small, calm dog. Buddy hasn’t lived with children but is fine with children he meets, so older, calmer teenage children should be OK for him to share his new home with. He isn’t suitable to live with cats though as Buddy unfortunately has a taste for cat poo. Oh, innocent-faced Buddy, we simply don’t believe that you could do anything so unsavoury!

Buddy is used to having his owner around a lot of the time, as she has always worked from home, but he is fine to be left for a couple of hours occasionally while you go out shopping etc. Once settled in his new home this could gradually be extended to 3 or possibly 4 hours, but any longer and Buddy would be too anxious. Buddy absolutely cannot be placed in a kennel or crate. He moved with his owner from South Africa, to Dublin originally, and unfortunately the journey left him with a fear of crates and kennels. His new people would need a dog sitter if they were to go away at all, as commercial kennels are definitely not an option for Buddy. However, this big guy absolutely LOVES car rides, so holidays where he could go along with you would be wonderful for him.

Buddy is a creature of habit and needs a reliable routine. He currently enjoys two walks per day of about 15 minutes in the morning and 30 minutes in the evening. He walks beautifully on lead and off lead. When off lead, he stays close. On lead, he walks ahead but doesn’t pull. He stops when his owner says stop, and waits similarly. He is a total pleasure to walk.

Buddy does enjoy playing in the garden but you don’t need to have a large property. He is happy to be at his owner’s side 24/7, so a small garden would be fine. He’s a sniffer when out walking – his owner calls his walks sniff safaris… “sniffarises”! At home he likes to spend about 10-15 minutes in the morning playing fetch or tug of war with his soft toys, and will happily settle down at your feet for the rest of the day after that little play time.

As Buddy loves car journeys so much, his owner often takes him for a ride instead of a walk if it is raining. Buddy travels very well in the car, and has been back and forth to Dublin on the ferry many times. He lies on the back seat and stays in the car on the 3 hour ferry journey.

Lovely Buddy’s favourite things are his soft toys, walks in the forest, dips in a stream, and rides in the car. He loves being with “his family”. He is a bit food obsessed!

Buddy is terrified of fireworks, and loud bangs (shotgun). He is not fond of cigarette smoke, so needs a non-smoker home. He is also not fond of overly energetic dogs, and he would be suited to a quiet, calm environment.

Big Buddy has no major health issues other than slight IBD, which is well managed with the correct diet and medication. He saw the vet last week, and she said he was in good health. He has a bit of age-related joint stiffness, but not enough to warrant medication. Buddy is chemically neutered, but his owner would have him neutered if this was absolutely necessary.

This gorgeous lad really needs to be settled in a suitable home as soon as possible as he’s currently in a tiny flat with no garden. Could you offer him a wonderful new life where he can be with you most of the time and will never have to go in a crate/kennel?

Buddy is being rehomed privately by Charmaine, who has confirmed that she will take him back if his new home doesn’t work out for any reason. Prospective adopters will be carefully homechecked.
