23/2/22 – We are delighted to say that Olive and Archie have gone off to their lovely new home!

—————

This adorable pair are Olive (right, Pug) and Archie (left, Chihuahua). They’re both about 9 years old and in an Oldies Club rescue foster home in Mattishall, Norfolk while they wait for someone suitably lovely to offer them a permanent home.

Happy in foster: They both settled in to their foster home pretty much straight away. From the first day they were quiet, gentle and friendly, especially Archie. Olive didn’t move around much at first, probably because she’s blind and felt a bit lost in her new surroundings. Within a few days, she grew in confidence and soon found her way around the house.

Can be left alone sometimes: They have been left for 3-4 hours occasionally since being in foster and didn’t seem to mind. Archie does love human interaction though, so it’s thought he needs a home where someone is usually around and has time to play with him. Olive is happy as long as she knows where Archie is.

Good with dogs: Archie likes playing with other dogs and they’re both happy to meet new dogs on walks. Archie will sometimes bark but it’s just with excitement. They get on really well with the resident dog in their foster home. They’d be happy living with another friendly dog, then Archie can play chase every day! Olive can’t really play much with her lack of vision but she does a good job at hide and seek. Guess where she is in this picture…

…that’s right! She likes hiding in bags!

No cats: Well, not unless they like a game of chase as much as Archie!

Children: Olive does love to sleep a lot and, obviously, being blind needs extra consideration so as not to be surprised. They’ve met a couple of children aged 9 and 10 since being in foster and seemed to enjoy the attention. They would be happy with visiting grandchildren under supervision.

Love their walks: They currently have a 45 minute walk in the afternoon but would happily got out more. Olive has to stay on the lead at all times and needs to be guided up and down kerbs with the lead. She was very overweight when they arrived but she has lost some weight now and has a lot more energy. She loves to trot along especially at the beach and the woods.

Archie gets quite excited about walks. He is very good on the lead and loves to sniff everything, although he can be a little stubborn if he’s not ready to walk on.  Off the lead on the beach or woods, he stays close by most of the time and normally comes when called, depending on what he’s sniffing. A treat always brings him running.

Good in the car: They’re both well behaved, happy travellers.

Archie’s favourite pastimes: Archie loves his walks and loves to play ball. Indoors, he plays fetch with a soft toy, although he can be a bit possessive over it until he is ready for it to be thrown again. He will patiently stare at it for ages and ages just waiting for you to throw it and sometimes barks if he gets impatient. Adorable though he is, he can be a tad demanding and knows whether he’s had his fun quota met or not. He also enjoys a little snooze and loves his cuddles.

Olive’s favourite pastimes: Olive would snooze all day long if she could and has the sweetest snore. She loves to cuddle up on your lap as much as possible and snuggles up with Archie at bedtime. Her second favourite pastime is eating, although she has been on a diet since she arrived. She barks and bounces up and down when its dinner time, which is quite comical. She loves going for walks now that she has more energy. She also has a hobby of licking things…soft furnishings, carpets, clothes etc. She’s certainly a character!

Dislikes: Olive doesn’t like having her muddy paws wiped but apart from that, nothing seems to frighten her. Archie is only frightened of the vets. He shakes when he goes in, bless him! He really doesn’t like getting bored either and needs plenty to do, such as ball games.

Olive & Archie’s ideal home: Their perfect home would be somewhere where someone will play and interact with Archie a lot and make sure he has plenty of exercise, followed by lots of cuddles with both of them. They also like to socialise with other dogs and people. They must have a garden as Archie loves to play and potter about and Olive likes to eat grass. Although they both enjoy the company of men and women, Olive seems to form a stronger bond with women.

Health notes: Archie and Olive are both vaccinated, chipped, wormed and flea treated. Archie is neutered but it is unknown if Olive has been spayed. The vet cannot see a scar, so suggested waiting to see if she comes into season. She’s been in foster care for 6 months and she hasn’t had a season yet so it’s assumed she must have been spayed. Olive has had 1 eye removed and the other is blind. The existing eye may need removing at some point in the future but is not necessary at present.

More from their foster carer: “Archie is alert, playful and friendly. Olive is placid, sweet-natured and comical. They’re both very affectionate, such a lovable little pair of dogs. They are great fun and a joy to have around. They will warm your heart and make you smile every day.”

If you would love to offer a home to an oldie but your circumstances aren’t suitable, perhaps you would be kind enough to sponsor one of the special oldies we are caring for that, due to health problems, are unlikely to be offered a permanent home.
