Trixie is the cutest 12-year-old Patterdale Terrier X who came into rescue because the children in her home were too boisterous for her. Trixie is in an Oldies Club foster home in Welling, Kent, waiting for someone to offer her a permanent home.

Summary: Trixie settled in quickly at her foster home but is still a bit anxious and doesn’t like to be left on her own. Trixie can live with a dog-confident cat. She’s OK with dogs in some situations but not others, so needs to be the only dog in her new home. She is very much a companion dog that is full of love.

Needs company: Trixie needs a home with someone around all of the time as she get very worried on her own. She wants to be with her ‘main’ human all of the time and she tends to follow her foster carer around the home. If her foster carer goes out, the person that stays at home with Trixie says she is quite noisy but never destructive.

Paradoxical attitude to dogs: Trixie lived with another dog in her former home, and is fine with dogs she meets in for example the pet shop, and will wag her tail at them, but when out on walks it is a different matter. If she sees a dog when on a walk, she will bark and pull to try to get to it. She is therefore best walked in areas where she can avoid meeting dogs. Due to Trixie’s reaction to dogs on walks, we aren’t able to recommend her for living with them.

Good with cats: Trixie has lived with cats previously and is also living with a cat at her foster home and is fine with it, after having an initial chase. She could be rehomed to live with a confident cat that is used to dogs.

Fine with older children: Trixie doesn’t want to live with young children, but kind and sensible teenagers should be fine for her.

Loves walks and adventures: She loves getting out and about and is great on the lead. Her recall is hit and miss so she stays on a very long lead and loves going for walks in the woods. She’s happy to go out whenever you want to take her and she loves an adventure. Ideally she needs a minimum of two 30-minute walks a day, plus garden time for sniffing, exploring and sunbathing.

Excellent in the car: Trixie loves a car journey and is very well behaved, as you can see in the photos!

Trixie’s favourite pastimes: She loves treats and cuddles, and nice leisurely walks in the woods to explore.

Trixie’s dislikes: She becomes anxious at the vets. She also dislikes the vacuum cleaner and will try to bite it, but not aggressively.

Her ideal home: Trixie needs a home with someone who is around all day, with a garden as she loves to sniff around. She also wants a home where she will be allowed to sleep on the bed with you. Her foster carer has a set of little steps that help Trixie get on the bed. She can jump up herself but sometimes finds it difficult.

Health notes: Trixie is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and has been wormed and flea-treated. She has some itchiness at times and is on a gastrointestinal/hypoallergenic diet to help manage this and her windiness. Even on this diet she still scratches and her foster carer suspects it is related to general anxiety. She has lost some vision but this doesn’t seem to affect her.

More from Trixie’s foster carer:Trixie is loving, loyal, playful and cuddly. Trixie came into my home after a very long car journey, but straight away she was full of love and kisses. She settled in after a couple of days. At first she chased our cat, but after a week and half they were used to each other, so she can live with a cat. She is protective over food but only with other animals. She gets very anxious at times but is getting better. Trixie loves to be by your side all the time so if you’re looking for a loyal companion, Trixie is your girl. She has so much love to give. She likes to sleep by your side and sleeps through till you wake up. She has daily walks in the woods where she loves to walk at her own pace, sniffing around. She is always happy to go out and bounces around in excitement. Trixie is house-trained but when left alone she will wee, so I leave puppy pads down if I need to go out and she will use them. She loves a treat when she comes in from the garden after going for a wee or poo, but she has learnt to do two trips to the garden so that she gets double treats! She doesn’t go outside and do it all in one go. Trixie loves bedtime and as soon as the TV goes off she gets excited, heads for her bed and awaits her bedtime treat and snuggles! With time and patience from her person, Trixie will truly blossom.

If you would love to offer a home to an oldie but your circumstances aren’t suitable, perhaps you would be kind enough to sponsor one of the special oldies we are caring for that, due to health problems, are unlikely to be offered a permanent home.
