22/7/18 – Bear has found a home
—————

True to his name, Bear is a big, fluffy teddy and he is a German Shepherd Cross. He is 10 years old and has a gorgeous, black and tan, long-haired coat that needs regular brushing. Bear is not living at the Ark Animal Rescue and Retirement Home but remaining in his own home near Grimsby because he has been in the Ark a couple of times already and wants to avoid going back into kennels. But a meeting can be arranged to meet him at the Ark.

Bear has been in his current home since being rehomed from the Ark in 2016, but the marriage has broken up and he’s living temporarily with a relative. He was previously returned to the Ark when his owner had an accident and had to go into residential care, so it’s been circumstances beyond his control on both occasions that he finds himself looking for a new home.

Bear is a lovely, friendly and affectionate dog with people he knows and has never shown any aggression. He loves cuddles, although he is nervous of strangers at first. He has mixed with children in the past and was good with all ages, but would now be better with teenagers upwards. He’s fine with dogs he knows but can be choosy with those he doesn’t and still can have some issues with large male dogs. He’s living with a 3 year-old Labrador bitch and loves her and has lived with 2 cats; he will chase them in the garden but is fine in the house.

Bear is house-trained and can be left for 4 hours. He sleeps in his own bed and loves the car. Bear walks to heel when told and his recall is good if there are no other dogs around. He also enjoys playing with toys. Bear responds better to men and can pull strongly if he wants to get to another dog, so needs somebody who can handle him and who has experience of large dog handling.

Bear has been neutered and his vaccinations are being updated. He does sometimes get a bit stiff, mainly when getting up after resting and when getting into the car, but daily cod liver oil helps this a lot. He is otherwise fit and well and eats a complete dry food with a little meat and a dessert spoon of cod liver oil added to each feed.
