Dexter is an 8 years old Staffie who came into Oldies Club care in November 2024 as his owner was moving and unable to take him with them.
When Dexter first arrived he instantly displayed what a friendly boy he is. Also after a good look around his foster home he quickly demonstrated a knack for opening door handles. He eventually settled at midnight but was clearly missing his owner.
A couple days later Dexter had his first epileptic fit in our care. The shaking lasted 3-4 minutes and then he was just very dazed for a while. He must have sensed it was coming as he went to his fosterer to be held.

When visiting the vets they took blood to assess that Dexter was on the right level of medication to help with his seizures. They also discovered he had an ulcer on his eye so he was giving drops to help treat it. His ulcer healed quickly but he managed to injure the pad on one foot so was sporting a bandage and a cone of shame for some time whilst it healed. He then had a sore on his nose which required treatment. The poor boy has been through quite a bit in the time he has been in our care.
Dexter continued to have small seizures over the next few months which would leave him disorientated for a time before he would recover and get back to normal. Unfortunately he is on the highest level of medication that he can have to help control them. Due to his unstable epilepsy and unknown time left it was decided that Dexter would be placed in our sponsor dog scheme. This means he will remain in his lovely foster home on a permanent basis, with the charity paying his vet bills for the rest of his life.

Dexter is a loving boy who seeks cuddles and adores all of the scritches and fuss people make over him. He presumes that everyone has treats for him and he does love to rummage in bags looking for things that must be for him.
He enjoys his food and is especially fond of cheese. Dexter loves having the odd “pup cup” dog ice cream and will devour them with much enthusiasm.

Dexter enjoys walking in the fields. He can be hit and miss with other dogs. He is mostly ok with other dogs near him now, apart from a few he just hates (and they hate him too!), which is a giant step for him. He has come a long way! He surprised his fosterers when he actually started to play with another dog which he hasn’t done that since he arrived.
Dexter absolutely LOVES going for rides in the car, where he sits in the middle of the back seat (safely secured of course) so he can get a good view out of the front windscreen.

Dexter is a bit of a princess and of course sleeps on his fosters bed because he is obviously far too good-a-boy to sleep in his dog bed!
If you would love to offer a home to an oldie but your circumstances aren’t suitable, perhaps you would be kind enough to sponsor Dexter, or one of the other special oldies we are caring for in our sponsor dog scheme.
