This endearing little Patterdale Terrier is Toby! He’s a mere 10 years old and is currently charming volunteer walkers at the kennels used by Rescue Remedies near Gatwick on the Surrey/West Sussex border.
Toby had belonged to one person before coming into rescue care but that person became anxious about Toby being around young children. Older, dog savvy children would be fine for him. He wants to be the only pet at home so he can have all the love!
Toby is an easy little dog to walk – no pulling, he sits for treats and loves to stop for cuddles mid-walk.
He enjoys the company of dogs he is familiar with on walks but can sometimes be reactive to those unknown to him especially if they are much larger or barking at him. Toby is a small dog therefore easy to distract with treats or moving him away from the situation if the need arises.
One volunteer walker said, “Passing a number of dogs out walking Toby ignored them all, I was super proud of him. He is quite selective these days at who he barks at but the promise of a treat or just gentle persuasion (he is quite small) to keep moving resolves the situation quickly. We walked past a number of cows lazily grazing in their field and although Toby watched them through the fence, he did not seem particularly interested so we moved on, coming across a field of sheep Toby once again watched but soon decided they too were of no interest.”
Toby has not had many trips out in the car during the year he has spent with Rescue Remedies but a regular walker took him out recently in her car and he appeared to be absolutely fine.
Toby still has the enthusiasm and joy for life of a younger dog but has the steadier nature of a mature Terrier. He would be an excellent companion for someone who enjoys getting out for walks but also likes to cuddle on a sofa and relax with their little best friend who thinks they’re amazing!
