Cute Niko is a special, 11 year old French Bulldog who arrived in the care of Mayhew Animal Home in North West London as an unclaimed stray. Niko is a lovely boy who is looking for a loving, retirement home, where he can feel safe and loved, have gentle walks and plenty of cuddle time on the sofa.

Niko builds very strong bonds and he can become upset when left alone. He is looking for a home where there is someone around for most of the day and where they will build up the time he is left alone slowly. Niko would be best suited to being the only pet in the home and he could live with sensible children from 12 years of age and upwards who are used to being around dogs.

Niko is just the sweetest boy and a real love bug. You could not meet a more affectionate dog. He loves having his tummy rubbed and also a good chest massage and, if you stop, he will politely give you his paw to request more attention. Any family will be lucky to adopt this special boy.

Mayhew and his carer say: “Sweet Niko has been hanging out with us behind Reception for the last few weeks. He has been the perfect Reception ‘Assistant’; he is quiet, well-behaved and sweet natured, always happy to have a snuggle when asked, pretty much the perfect dog! Anyone wants an affectionate and undemanding doggy companion should consider this lovely dog.

Niko is a very dear boy. He loves to roll around in the grass and lie quietly in the same room as his carers, which is his favourite activity to keep us company. He uses the garden for toileting and prefers pretty short walks. Though wary of other animals, he is very friendly and curious to meet people. He was calm and gentle when meeting our neighbour’s two-year-old. Despite his cataracts, he navigates the house and stairs easily to be with us. It will be hard to see him go when the time comes.”

It was clear when he arrived Niko could not see very well with perhaps some previous trauma to his right eye resulting in permanent damage, and possibly a cataract in his other eye. However, he is not in pain and he copes very well with his poor eye sight. He also arrived with nails so overgrown they were cutting into his paws, causing infections, which have now been treated and healed.

Niko is a brachycephalic breed type, therefore his adopter will need to be knowledgeable about brachy care and have researched his breed. His eyes will need monitoring for redness or discomfort; if they do become painful, then they may need removing in the future. He has been neutered, microchipped and vaccinated and is up-to-date with flea and worm treatment. He has also been health checked and behaviourally assessed.

Despite heading into his twilight years, Niko enjoys his walks (although not a fan of the rain!) and he makes a steady walking companion. He is a sensitive soul, who can be a little worried around other dogs and he prefers to keep himself to himself but loves people. He will make a wonderful companion for a special person willing to give him the home, love and security that he so deserves.
