June 2022 – We are delighted to say that Sullivan has found the most wonderful new home where he is loved and adored!

This is an urgent appeal for a foster/foster-to-adopt home for Sullivan as he needs someone strong enough to control him when he gets excited outdoors. Could you help Sullivan?

Sullivan is a 9 year old American Bull Dog/Labrador Crossbreed and he is a big, strong boy weighing 35kg. He is currently being fostered in Cardiff, Wales. Oldies Club will arrange transport to his new foster home but it will need to be within a 3-hour drive.

He’s a big, friendly lad who gets excited when he sees other dogs, or children playing, and can get a bit bouncy. We’re therefore looking for a foster home where he’ll be your only pet and there are no children to be knocked over!

Sullivan came into the care of Oldies Club after his male owner was made homeless. Despite the upheaval of leaving his owner, Sullivan settled quickly into his foster home. He is gentle and affectionate with a sensitive nature. He is also strong and powerful and loves to play, especially with a man.

Sullivan’s ideal foster home would be able to provide him with the opportunity to have a good runabout. In his current foster home he is unable to run off-lead, but he potters around the small garden amusing himself by ambushing the resident sparrows. He is currently fostered in a terraced house, which is not ideal as it makes managing the noise element of his anxiety a challenge. Sullivan struggles with separation anxiety. He does not particularly mind who is with him but does not like being alone in the home and will howl and bark as a protest. According to his previous owner this was not a problem, so it may have developed as a consequence of the change in his recent circumstances.

Sullivan does seem to be especially comfortable around men and becomes noticeably more playful and alert when he hears a man’s voice. In the home, Sullivan is very relaxed and enjoys long peaceful naps on the sofa. He is very aware of any visitors and people approaching the house and barks an alert. He is very friendly and welcoming to anyone coming into the house and generally seems to love being around people, including children. Sullivan has been taught to respond to basic commands.

Sullivan sleeps right through the night without stirring. Initially, he spent each night on the sofa downstairs but now he has found a way to the bedroom and clearly prefers not to be alone. Sullivan is completely house-trained and asks politely to go outside. He has two meals a day consisting of hard and soft food. He would like to share in the human food on offer, but his carer has been working hard on not encouraging begging behaviour, and his manners are much improved.

Sullivan loves going for a walk using a harness and short lead. In quiet environments, he has been able to adjust his walking pace to that of his current fosterer. In stimulating situations, he becomes excited and wants to join in whatever is going on. He then requires someone who is strong enough to keep him under control. He is very interested in other dogs. He has shown no aggression, and if a dog gives him a warning growl, he backs off. At present, he is intact and that has caused difficulty with a neutered male who visited the house. Sullivan is due to be neutered in the near future.

Sullivan has been given antibiotics and steroids for infected and inflamed ears. This appears to be a recurrent condition. He does not like his ears being touched so patience and guile are necessary to keep his ears clean and treated.

Although we are initially seeking a foster home, we would be very happy to hear from anyone wanting to foster Sullivan with a view to keeping him permanently.
