Gentle Blade is a stunningly handsome 8 year old tri-colour Border Collie boy who is at Chilterns Dog Rescue Society in Tring, Hertfordshire.

Life has not been kind to poor Blade. Home circumstances resulted in him not receiving the consistent care and attention he needed, despite being much loved. Blade has had ongoing eye problems for many years. Treatment has been prescribed but was administered intermittently. Despite having poor sight, Blade copes really well and will be a loving and loyal companion for someone who understands that, for a dog, poor sight isn’t much of a disability as their other senses are so strong and they quickly map out their surroundings.

Blade will love to share country walks with you, but he will need to stay on the lead as, although he has good recall, he could easily get lost if allowed to be free in an open area. A safe, secure garden will be important for Blade so that he can enjoy time outside off the lead.

Blade needs a quiet home with gentle exercise. He is used to older children and is tolerant of other dogs but would probably prefer to be the only dog in the home. He is unused to cats.

The current veterinary advice for Blade is that he is coping really well and there is no infection in his eyes. Both lenses have defects and his retinas are very damaged, so it is estimated that he has only 20% of normal vision. While stable now, there is a risk this could deteriorate, so Blade needs a home where he will be safe, secure and comfortable if his sight was to fail in either or both eyes. He was showing stiffness in his hips but this has improved with gentle daily exercise, and he is gradually getting fitter and gaining muscle tone.

Blade needs a wonderful collie-loving person who understands the needs of partially sighted dogs. For that ‘right’ person, he will repay the care and love he receives, over and over again.
